The Edo State Police Command has confirmed that normalcy has been restored following a brief protest attempt at the official launch of the Museum of West African Art (MOWAA) in Benin City on Sunday, November 9, 2025.
According to a statement issued by ASP Eno Ikoedem, the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, the Command received credible intelligence earlier in the day indicating that a group of individuals planned to disrupt the high-profile event. Acting swiftly, the police deployed adequate personnel to the venue to forestall any breakdown of law and order.
Upon arrival at the scene, the Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, personally addressed the protesters in an effort to de-escalate tensions. His intervention was said to have calmed the situation, preventing the protest from turning violent.
“The Commissioner of Police addressed the protesters, thereby de-escalating the tension. Normalcy was immediately restored, while expatriates and other guests at the venue were safely evacuated to their respective hotels without any hitch,” the statement read.
The police further assured the public that the situation was fully under control and that engagements were ongoing with relevant stakeholders to resolve any grievances through lawful and peaceful means.
Reaffirming the Command’s commitment to the protection of lives and property, ASP Ikoedem stated that officers had been stationed across the state to ensure public peace and security.
“The Edo State Police Command remains committed to its constitutional mandate of protecting lives and property, maintaining public peace, and ensuring that the rights of citizens are respected within the ambit of the law,” the statement continued.
Residents were urged to go about their normal activities without fear, as the Command maintained that adequate security measures had been put in place throughout Edo State.
