The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of three individuals in connection with the alleged murder of a man identified as 38-year-old Stanley Okirie in Akute, in what authorities describe as a disturbing case involving alleged family conspiracy and an attempted cover-up.
According to a statement from the command, detectives from the Ajuwon Division carried out the arrest on Thursday, April 9, 2026, at about 11:15 a.m., following a tip-off from an anonymous source about suspicious activity in the area. Acting on the intelligence, officers reportedly arrived at the scene and intercepted one of the suspects while allegedly attempting to bury a blood-stained body in a shallow grave.
The suspects identified by the police are 35-year-old Maureen Okirie, 15-year-old Salia Karikari, and 12-year-old Jubril Karikari. Authorities say all three are relatives of the deceased and are being investigated for their alleged roles in both the killing and the attempted concealment of the crime.
Preliminary findings suggest that the victim suffered a severe head injury, allegedly inflicted with a wooden pestle during an attack inside a residential setting. Investigators further allege that the suspects collaborated in the assault and later attempted to secretly dispose of the body in order to avoid detection. The suspected weapon used in the incident has since been recovered by police.
The body of the deceased has been transferred to the Life Channel Mortuary in Olambe, where an autopsy is expected to be conducted to determine the exact cause of death and provide further forensic evidence to support ongoing investigations.
Police authorities confirmed that the suspects are currently in custody and will be moved to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further interrogation and prosecution. Officials say the case is being treated with urgency due to its severity and the alleged attempt to obstruct justice.
The Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, CP Bode Ojajuni, condemned the incident in strong terms, describing it as both cruel and deeply disturbing, particularly given the alleged involvement of close family members. He stressed that acts of violence within family settings, as well as any attempt to conceal criminal conduct, would not be tolerated under any circumstances.
He further assured that the command is committed to conducting a thorough and transparent investigation, adding that all individuals found culpable will be prosecuted in accordance with the law. The commissioner also urged residents to remain vigilant, report suspicious activities promptly, and continue cooperating with security agencies in efforts to prevent and address violent crime.
The police reiterated that community intelligence remains a critical component of crime prevention and encouraged members of the public to make use of designated emergency contact lines for rapid response. Authorities say the swift action in this case demonstrates the importance of timely information in preventing further concealment of serious offences.
As investigations continue, the incident has sparked concern in the Akute area, with residents expressing shock over the alleged circumstances surrounding the death. Police say further updates will be provided as the case progresses through the criminal justice process.
