Gunmen have killed a mother and her daughter during a violent attack and kidnapping incident at a poultry farm in Igushi, via Ala in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State, in an assault that also led to the rescue of two other victims by police operatives.

The attack reportedly occurred on Thursday when about five armed men invaded the farm premises, unleashing violence that left two members of the family dead and others abducted before security intervention led to the rescue of two individuals.

The incident was confirmed on Friday in Akure by the spokesperson of the Ondo State Police Command, Deputy Superintendent of Police Abayomi Jimoh, who described the attack as a “heinous violent incident” and expressed condolences over the loss of lives.

According to him, the police command strongly condemned the assault, which resulted in the tragic deaths of the poultry farm owner and her daughter, who were both present at the farm during the invasion by the armed group.

He stated that police operatives responded swiftly to the distress situation and successfully rescued two victims alive during a coordinated operation, though two other individuals were confirmed killed during the attack.

Jimoh added that the command had intensified security measures in the area to prevent further attacks and ensure the protection of lives and property across Akure North and surrounding communities.

He further disclosed that efforts were ongoing to track down and arrest those responsible for the killings and abductions, noting that the police were working with intelligence-driven operations to locate the suspects.

The police spokesperson urged residents of the state to remain calm but vigilant, encouraging them to support security agencies with timely and useful information that could aid ongoing investigations and help prevent similar incidents in the future.

He emphasized that community cooperation remains critical in addressing insecurity, particularly in rural and semi-rural areas where rapid response can be challenging due to terrain and limited surveillance infrastructure.

The attack in Igushi adds to growing concerns over sporadic violent incidents and kidnappings in parts of Ondo State, where rural farms, highways, and isolated communities have occasionally been targeted by armed groups.

Security agencies have in recent months intensified patrols and surveillance operations across vulnerable areas in the state as part of broader efforts to curb kidnapping and violent crime affecting agricultural communities and road users.

Ondo State, like several other parts of southwestern Nigeria, has witnessed intermittent security challenges, with authorities often attributing such incidents to criminal networks operating across forested areas and border routes.

The police command reiterated its commitment to ensuring that those responsible for the latest attack are brought to justice, stressing that investigations had already commenced and would be pursued to a logical conclusion.

Residents of the affected community have been left in shock following the incident, as fears grow over the safety of rural farm settlements that are often isolated and difficult to secure.

Authorities have continued to call for increased community vigilance and improved collaboration between residents and security agencies as part of efforts to strengthen local security architecture and prevent further attacks.

As investigations progress, the police say they are working to gather intelligence that will lead to the arrest of the perpetrators and dismantling of the criminal network behind the attack.

The incident underscores ongoing security challenges in parts of Ondo State, where authorities continue to balance rural policing with broader efforts to tackle kidnapping, armed robbery, and related violent crimes affecting communities and agricultural livelihoods.
