The Imo State Police Command has dismantled a large-scale armed robbery syndicate involved in vehicle snatching and motorcycle theft, recovering no fewer than 450 suspected stolen motorcycles in what authorities describe as a significant breakthrough against organized crime in the state.
The operation was carried out by the Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit following an intelligence-driven investigation that began with a missing person report and gradually exposed a wider criminal network operating across several locations. Police authorities confirmed that multiple suspects have been arrested in connection with the case, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend others believed to be part of the syndicate.
According to police officials, the investigation was triggered on April 6, 2026, after a resident of Owerri North Local Government Area reported that his commercial driver had gone missing along with a shuttle bus. The driver had reportedly left for work the previous day but failed to return, prompting concern from his employer and eventual involvement of security operatives.
The situation escalated when the driver was later found abandoned and unconscious along the Irete axis of Onitsha Road. He was immediately taken to a medical facility for treatment, with authorities confirming that the attackers had taken the vehicle after assaulting him.
Acting on the report, operatives launched a coordinated search that led them to a workshop in Orlu, where the stolen shuttle bus was discovered. Police said the vehicle was in the process of being repainted, a move believed to be aimed at concealing its identity and avoiding detection. Two suspects were arrested at the location, marking the first major breakthrough in the case.
Further investigation and interrogation of the suspects led to additional arrests and the exposure of a more extensive criminal operation. Police identified key members of the syndicate and revealed that the group operated through a structured network involving those who carried out thefts and others who handled the resale or redistribution of stolen items.
As the investigation progressed, operatives uncovered a large collection of motorcycles suspected to have been stolen from various parts of the state and possibly beyond. What initially appeared to be a smaller recovery expanded significantly following additional intelligence, eventually leading to the recovery of 450 motorcycles, one of the largest such recoveries recorded in recent operations within the region.
Police authorities stated that the suspects could not provide any verifiable proof of ownership for the motorcycles, reinforcing the belief that they were proceeds of organized criminal activity. Investigators also disclosed that the syndicate had attempted to relocate the motorcycles to hidden locations along bush paths to evade detection, but these efforts were thwarted through timely intelligence.
In addition to the motorcycles, officers recovered a substantial sum of cash amounting to over six million naira, along with multiple vehicle registration plates and other items described as incriminating exhibits. These discoveries, according to authorities, provide further evidence of the scale and sophistication of the syndicate’s operations.
