The Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, has commended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for what he described as the creation of a conducive environment for private sector growth, following the formal signing of a franchise partnership between Hypercity Supermarket and global retail brand Carrefour in Abuja.
Speaking on behalf of President Bola Tinubu at the signing ceremony held on Tuesday in the capital, Gbajabiamila described the development as a strong signal of investor confidence in Nigeria’s economy, particularly within the Federal Capital Territory. He said the agreement reflects growing international and domestic interest in Nigeria as a viable destination for long-term commercial investment.
The Chief of Staff specifically praised the FCT Minister for his role in facilitating the deal, describing Wike as a “deep thinker” whose approach to governance has contributed to reshaping both the economic outlook and physical development of Abuja. He noted that the partnership was evidence of ongoing efforts to reposition the capital city as a competitive hub for retail and business expansion.
According to him, the successful conclusion of the agreement demonstrates the Federal Capital Territory’s emerging role in attracting large-scale private investment, with potential ripple effects across other parts of the country. He added that Abuja is currently laying the foundation for what he described as a broader retail transformation that could extend to major urban centres such as Lagos and beyond.
Gbajabiamila also used the occasion to assure international investors of Nigeria’s stability and long-term economic potential, urging them to view the country not only as a consumer market but as a strategic base for sustainable business partnerships. He said ongoing reforms and infrastructure development under the current administration are aimed at improving the ease of doing business nationwide.
The Hypercity–Carrefour partnership is expected to introduce expanded retail operations, including the rollout of new outlets and the gradual rebranding of existing stores. Officials involved in the agreement said the collaboration is designed to enhance modern retail services in Nigeria, improve product availability, and strengthen supply chain efficiency.
Speaking at the event, the Managing Director of Hypercity Supermarket, Sunny Chuwla, described the partnership as a significant step toward transforming Nigeria’s retail sector. He said the collaboration would drive investment, stimulate industrial growth, and create employment opportunities across multiple regions of the country.
Chuwla noted that the expansion strategy includes the opening of new stores in Abuja and other major cities, as well as the transition of existing outlets in Port Harcourt to the Carrefour brand. He described the initiative as part of a broader vision to establish a world-class retail ecosystem in Nigeria that combines international operational standards with local market opportunities.
He added that the Nigerian market has demonstrated strong growth potential since Hypercity began operations in Port Harcourt in 2022, stressing that the new partnership represents a shift from observation to active investment in the country’s retail sector. According to him, the goal is to meet rising consumer demand while supporting local producers and suppliers through expanded distribution channels.
The agreement is also expected to generate employment opportunities, both directly within retail operations and indirectly through supply chain activities, logistics, and local sourcing networks. Stakeholders involved in the deal say this will contribute to broader economic growth and skills development within the sector.
Officials further stated that the momentum generated by the Abuja launch is expected to support future expansion into other major urban centres, with Lagos identified as a key target for growth. The retail collaboration is also expected to strengthen Nigeria’s position as one of the leading consumer markets in Africa.
The FCT administration has in recent years intensified efforts to attract private investment into Abuja, focusing on infrastructure development, urban renewal, and regulatory reforms aimed at improving investor confidence. The Hypercity–Carrefour deal is being presented as one of the outcomes of these initiatives.
Observers say the partnership reflects increasing interest from global retail brands in Nigeria’s expanding consumer market, driven by a growing population, urbanisation, and changing consumption patterns. Analysts also note that the success of such ventures will depend on sustained policy stability, infrastructure support, and consumer purchasing power.
As the partnership moves into its implementation phase, attention is expected to focus on execution timelines, expansion plans, and the impact on local suppliers and competitors within the retail sector. The deal is widely viewed as part of a broader shift in Nigeria’s retail landscape toward more structured, international-standard operations.
