The All Progressives Congress has dismissed circulating reports suggesting that President Bola Tinubu is considering replacing Vice President Kashim Shettima ahead of the 2027 general elections, describing the claims as unfounded and politically motivated.

The clarification was made by the National Chairman of the APC, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, who addressed journalists in response to viral videos and online commentary alleging internal disagreements within the party over the vice-presidential ticket.

Yilwatda said the reports were false and misleading, stressing that there is no plan within the ruling party to alter the current leadership structure of the executive ticket. He noted that the speculation being shared on social media did not originate from official party channels and should not be taken as credible.

According to him, many of the claims currently circulating were promoted by opposition figures and individuals seeking to create confusion and weaken public confidence in the APC. He added that such narratives are part of routine political misinformation that often emerges ahead of election cycles.

The APC chairman explained that, in line with party procedures, discussions about vice-presidential candidates only take place after a presidential candidate has emerged through primaries. He stated that it is only after such a nomination process that considerations for a running mate are formally addressed.

He emphasized that the party remains focused on governance and policy implementation rather than premature political debates about future electoral arrangements. He also urged the public to disregard unverified reports and rely on official communication channels for accurate information about party decisions.

The clarification comes amid increased political activity and speculation ahead of the 2027 elections, with various reports and commentary already circulating about potential alignments, endorsements, and internal party dynamics. Such discussions have become more common as political actors begin early positioning ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, who was elected alongside President Tinubu in 2023, has remained an active figure in the administration, participating in policy engagements, diplomatic assignments, and domestic governance initiatives. The presidency has not issued any statement indicating changes to the current executive arrangement.

Political analysts note that rumours of internal realignments within major parties often intensify as election timelines approach, especially in environments where social media amplifies unverified claims. They caution that such narratives can contribute to public confusion if not promptly addressed by official sources.

The APC leadership has in recent months repeatedly called for caution regarding misinformation, particularly content circulating online that suggests divisions within the party or changes in its leadership structure without substantiated evidence.

Yilwatda reiterated that the APC remains united and focused on delivering on its mandate, adding that discussions about future elections will follow due process and established party mechanisms when the appropriate time comes.

For now, party officials maintain that there is no consideration or discussion regarding the replacement of the Vice President, and that the current administration continues to operate within its elected mandate.
