The Ogun State Police Command has clarified the circumstances surrounding a viral video and photographs that circulated on social media, which alleged the apprehension of suspected kidnappers in Kanuyi Community, Simawa. In a press release issued on Monday, June 1, 2026, the Command stated that the individuals in question were actually serving police officers attached to a Police Mobile Force Squadron in Lagos State, who had inadvertently lost their way while returning from an official duty post in Sagamu and were consequently mistaken for criminals by some members of the public.
According to the statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the Simawa Division received information on June 1 at about 11:00 a.m. that two suspected criminals had been apprehended by community members. Police operatives were immediately mobilised to the scene, where the individuals were rescued from an agitated crowd and taken into protective custody for proper identification and investigation. Preliminary investigation revealed that the individuals were serving police officers. Verification confirmed their identities through valid police identity cards, official deployment documents, uniforms, and other service materials. Their parent formation also authenticated their status as bona fide members of the Nigeria Police Force engaged in lawful duties.
The Command further discovered that before the arrival of police operatives, the officers had been searched, photographed, and video‑recorded by some members of the public, leading to the circulation of misleading content on social media. While the officers fortunately escaped physical harm, the incident subjected them to needless public suspicion and emotional trauma despite their commitment to safeguarding lives and property. The Ogun State Police Command appreciated the vigilance of residents and their readiness to support security efforts, but urged members of the public to exercise caution, avoid mob actions, and allow security agencies to verify facts before drawing conclusions or circulating information capable of endangering innocent persons.
The Command reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property, strengthening community policing, and fostering public trust through professionalism, accountability, and prompt response to security concerns. Residents were encouraged to continue reporting suspicious activities while allowing law enforcement agencies to carry out necessary verification and investigations. Members of the public were also advised to rely on verified information from official sources and refrain from sharing unconfirmed reports capable of causing panic, damaging reputations, or undermining public confidence in security operations.
