INEC Presents Certificates Of Return To Winners Of June 20 By-Elections In Five States

ABUJA, Nigeria – The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially issued Certificates of Return to the winners of the bye-elections held on Saturday, June 20, 2026, across Rivers, Enugu, Nasarawa, Ondo and Kano states, with the commission’s Supervising National Commissioner for Rivers State, Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, presenting the documents on behalf of the INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN. The presentation ceremony took place on Monday, June 22, at the INEC headquarters in Abuja, where Agbamuche-Mbu congratulated the winners and urged them to serve their constituents diligently. “The most important responsibility is to represent the people well,” she said, according to multiple reports.

In Rivers State, PDP candidate Olaka Nwogu was declared the winner of the Rivers South-East Senatorial District bye-election, polling 47,961 votes to defeat his closest rival, Osarokaka Ebenezer Erewari of the APC, who scored 1,647 votes. The election was conducted across seven local government areas to fill the vacancy created by the death of Senator Barry Mpigi in February 2026. In Enugu State, APC candidate Ikeje Asogwa won the Enugu North Senatorial District bye-election with a landslide 162,360 votes, defeating his closest rival, Dr. Nestor Ezeme of the PDP, who polled 9,299 votes. The by-election was held to replace the late Senator Okey Ezea, who died on November 18, 2025.

In Nasarawa State, APC candidate Danladi Halilu secured victory in the Nasarawa North Senatorial District bye-election with 45,362 votes, defeating Labour Party’s Labaran Maku, who polled 12,931 votes, and the PDP’s Emmanuel Ombugadu, who secured 11,570 votes. In Ondo State, APC candidate Prof. Dayo Faduyile won the Ondo South Senatorial District bye-election with 68,474 votes, defeating Adeolu Akinwunmi of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), who polled 1,411 votes. In Kano State, APC candidate Rabiu Shuaibu won the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency bye-election with 35,356 votes, defeating Lawal Garba-Haruna of the APM, who polled 268 votes, and Abubakar Yahaya-Muhammad of the Labour Party, who secured 98 votes.

Agbamuche-Mbu also disclosed that Certificates of Return would be presented to the winners in Kebbi State for the Zuru State Constituency election, where APC candidate Rabiu Garba Aiki secured 4,887 votes, and in Ekiti State for the governorship election, where Governor Biodun Oyebanji of the APC was re-elected with 319,224 votes. The presentation of certificates marks the formal conclusion of the electoral process for the June 20 bye-elections, which were described as a testing ground for political parties and the electoral body ahead of the 2027 general elections.
