A Federal High Court sitting in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital, on Monday, June 29, 2026, granted bail to a prominent grassroots mobilizer and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Jibril Ali Baggio, who was arraigned over allegations of defacing government-installed solar panels along the Lafia–Jos highway.
Baggio, a well-known figure in Nasarawa State politics and sports administration, was granted bail after he was formally charged with willful destruction of property, an offence contrary to and punishable under the Miscellaneous Offences Act of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Despite the bail ruling, the court ordered that he be remanded in custody pending the fulfillment of his bail conditions.
According to court documents, Baggio was accused of defacing the solar panels several months ago by pasting campaign posters of his preferred political aspirant on the government-installed facilities. The solar panels, which were part of a public infrastructure project along the busy Lafia–Jos highway, were allegedly vandalized through the unauthorized display of political campaign materials.
The case has drawn attention due to the high-profile nature of the accused. Baggio is a well-known APC chieftain in Nasarawa State and also serves as the Chairman of the Nasarawa United Football Club Supporters' Club. His influence in the state's political and sports circles has made the case a subject of public interest.
Following his arraignment, the court granted Baggio bail but imposed conditions that he must meet before his release. The specifics of the bail conditions were not immediately disclosed, but sources close to the court indicated that they include a monetary surety and the submission of travel documents to the court registry. As of the time of filing this report, Baggio remained in custody pending the perfection of his bail terms.
The case has been adjourned to a later date for further proceedings. Legal observers have noted that the charges against Baggio, if proven, could carry significant penalties under the Miscellaneous Offences Act, which provides for stiff punishments for the willful destruction of public property.
The incident has also reignited discussions about the misuse of public infrastructure for political campaigns, with some residents and civil society groups calling for stricter enforcement of laws protecting government assets.
