The Kano State Government, through the Kano State Urban Planning and Development Authority (KNUPDA), has sealed a residential property in the Mariri area of Tarauni Local Government Area after discovering a massive underground excavation beneath the building. The unauthorised structure, which measures between 20 and 40 feet deep, was reportedly larger than the house itself, sparking widespread speculation and security concerns.

The discovery was made during the authority's routine monitoring of building development approvals in the Mariri area, according to a statement issued on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, by KNUPDA's Acting Managing Director, Nura Ma'aude. The statement, signed by the authority's Public Relations Officer, Bahijja Malam-Kabara, revealed that the excavation was carried out without the required approval from the authority.

"We have sealed the property and directed the owner to report to KNUPDA for investigation and further regulatory action," Ma'aude said. He emphasised that the authority remains committed to enforcing building regulations across the state and warned that legal action would be taken against developers or individuals undertaking construction without the necessary approvals.

Ma'aude also appealed to ward heads and the general public to support the authority's efforts by reporting any suspicious or unauthorised construction activities in their neighbourhoods. According to him, community participation is vital to ensuring public safety, promoting orderly urban development, and preventing avoidable disasters.

The discovery of the underground excavation has fuelled widespread speculation and heightened security concerns within the community. While authorities have not disclosed the intended purpose of the excavation, the scale of the structure — reportedly larger than the house itself — has raised questions about its potential use. The owner of the property has been directed to report to KNUPDA for investigation, and further regulatory action is expected.

This incident is part of a broader crackdown by the Kano State Government on illegal structures and unauthorised developments across the state. In recent weeks, the government has intensified enforcement actions, sealing and marking numerous properties for violating land and building regulations. The state government has reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property through strict enforcement of urban planning regulations.

The Kano State Government has called on residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious construction activities to the authorities. Community leaders and ward heads have been urged to play an active role in ensuring that building regulations are strictly adhered to, preventing unauthorised developments that could compromise public safety and security.

As investigations continue, the sealed property in Mariri remains under the watchful eye of KNUPDA officials. Further updates are expected as the authority concludes its probe into the matter.
