The brother of veteran NFL defensive lineman Calais Campbell has been arrested and charged with the murder of their 71-year-old mother, Nateal Campbell, in a horrific incident that has left the family and the sports world in shock. Ciarre Campbell, 41, was taken into custody on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, after police discovered the body of his mother inside her home in the upscale Buckhead neighborhood of Atlanta, Georgia.

According to the Atlanta Police Department, officers responded to a welfare check call around 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday. A concerned family member had requested the check after being unable to reach Nateal Campbell. When officers arrived at the residence on the 3500 block of Roswell Road NW, they found a male, later identified as Ciarre Campbell, who had barricaded himself inside. After gaining entry, police discovered Nateal Campbell unresponsive and pronounced her dead at the scene. Arrest warrants obtained by multiple news outlets revealed the gruesome nature of the crime, stating that her throat had been cut and that Ciarre Campbell was found in possession of a knife.

Ciarre Campbell has been charged with two counts of murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a knife during the commission of a felony. He was booked into the Fulton County Jail, where he was being held without bond after waiving his initial court hearing on Wednesday, July 1. A defense attorney for the suspect, Jay Abt, has stated that his client is innocent and that he looks forward to his day in court.

The tragedy was preceded by a series of warning signs and multiple police visits to the home. Records show that officers had responded to the address at least nine times since September 2024 for various incidents, including a fight in progress, a suspicious person, and an earlier welfare check. In April, police had investigated a possible arson incident at the same location. Lieutenant Christopher Butler of the Atlanta Police Department also noted that there had been "indications of possible mental health issues" involving an individual connected to the home.

A 911 call released by police on Wednesday painted a desperate picture of a family trying to reach their matriarch. In the recording, an unidentified man explained that he was calling because his family could not get inside the house. He told the dispatcher that his brother, whom he described as "mentally ill" and who had been staying with their mother, was inside and claimed their mother had left. However, the caller stated that footage from a neighbor's security camera appeared to show that she had never left the residence.

In a statement released to ESPN, the Campbell family expressed their devastation. "We are devastated to share that the Campbell Family has lost its matriarch, Mrs. Nateal Campbell," the statement read. "While the details of her passing are still being investigated, we take comfort in knowing she is reunited with our father, her beloved Chuck, and in the arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ." The family requested privacy as they mourned.

Nateal Campbell was not just a mother but an active and beloved member of her community. She worked as a counselor and adviser for the Charles Richard Campbell Foundation, a charity founded by Calais Campbell and his siblings in honor of their late father. The foundation provides mentorship and educational resources to young people. In 2018, Calais Campbell wrote a heartfelt letter to his mother as part of an ESPN segment, stating, "I'm part of a lot of things in my life, but I'm most proud to call you my mother."

Calais Campbell, a 39-year-old defensive lineman currently with the Baltimore Ravens, has not publicly commented on the tragedy. He is entering his 19th NFL season after signing a one-year, $5.5 million contract in April. The six-time Pro Bowler and former Walter Payton Man of the Year has had a storied career that includes stints with the Arizona Cardinals, Jacksonville Jaguars, Atlanta Falcons, and Miami Dolphins. His brother, Ciarre Campbell, was also a football player, having played at Denver South High School and Colorado State University before failing to make it to the NFL.

The Baltimore Ravens have released a statement expressing their "deepest condolences and full support to Calais and his family during this difficult time."

The investigation into the death of Nateal Campbell is ongoing.
