Celebrations in Mexico City turned tragic on Tuesday night, June 30, 2026, as three people died from suffocation after thousands of fans poured into the streets to celebrate Mexico's historic 2-0 victory over Ecuador in the World Cup round of 32. The victims, identified as a 19-year-old woman, a 48-year-old woman, and a 44-year-old man, died from asphyxiation in the downtown area near the iconic Angel of Independence monument on Paseo de la Reforma, according to the city's public health authority. Despite receiving advanced resuscitation efforts from medical teams and paramedics, all three were pronounced dead at the scene or shortly after being transferred to hospitals.

The incident occurred as an estimated crowd of more than one million people gathered in the streets of the capital, marking the country's first knockout stage victory at a World Cup since 1986. The Mexico City government had closed the city's main boulevard and surrounding roads to traffic to accommodate the celebrations. However, the massive crush of fans proved overwhelming, leading to the deadly suffocation of the three victims. The health authority initially confirmed the deaths of the 44-year-old man and the 19-year-old woman, before later confirming the third victim, a 48-year-old woman, had also died from asphyxiation.

Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada Molina expressed her condolences to the families of the victims and pledged full government support. "With my heart in my hand, I am sending a hug and my most sincere condolences to their loved ones. We reiterate the call to always celebrate with responsibility, care, and empathy," she wrote on X. She also confirmed that all emergency medical protocols were activated after the three individuals were found unconscious at different locations near the monument. The city government had earlier urged the public to avoid heading downtown as the celebrations escalated.

The victory at the Azteca Stadium marked a significant milestone for Mexico, ending a 40-year wait for a World Cup knockout victory. However, the joy of the win was overshadowed by the tragic loss of life, as images shared on social media showed emergency responders and paramedics tending to distressed people lying on the ground amid the crowded celebrations. The city government has called on fans to celebrate responsibly as Mexico prepares for its next match in the tournament.
