The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to building a secure and trusted digital identity ecosystem as the Federal Ministry of Education and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) strengthen collaboration to extend trusted digital identity coverage to nearly 80 million learners across Nigeria's education system. The announcement follows a meeting between the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, and the Director-General of NIMC, Engr. Bisoye Coker-Odusote, on Friday, 10 July 2026, in Abuja.
Speaking during the meeting, the Minister described the NIMC Act, 2026, as a landmark reform that will strengthen governance, improve public service delivery and deepen trust in digital identity systems. He disclosed that the Ministry has integrated the National Learners' Identification Number (LIN) with the National Identification Number (NIN) through the Nigeria Education Management Information System (NEMIS), providing verified education data to support planning, equitable resource allocation and improved learning outcomes. He noted that Nigeria's education sector serves nearly 80 million learners across all levels of education, making the integration of digital identity a critical step towards modernising the sector.
The NIMC Director-General, Engr. Bisoye Coker-Odusote, revealed that over 120 million Nigerians have already been enrolled in the National Identity Database, while digital identity services continue to expand nationwide. She stressed that the partnership with the Ministry of Education would accelerate the enrolment of learners, ensuring that every child in the country has a verifiable digital identity from the earliest stage of their educational journey.
The integration of the LIN with the NIN is expected to streamline data management across the education sector, reduce duplication, and improve the accuracy of learner records. By linking these identification systems, the government aims to enhance policy formulation, track educational outcomes more effectively, and ensure that resources are allocated equitably to schools and learners across the country. The initiative also aligns with broader efforts to digitise public service delivery and strengthen the country's digital infrastructure.
The Federal Ministry of Education reaffirmed its commitment to working with NIMC to strengthen secure digital identity, improve education service delivery and advance national development. The partnership is part of the government's broader strategy to leverage technology for inclusive growth, improve access to quality education, and build a resilient digital economy that leaves no one behind.
