A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has ordered the remand of a 63-year-old alleged drug kingpin, Anochili Innocent, three Mexican nationals, and six other Nigerians at the Lagos Correctional Centre following their arraignment on an 11-count charge bordering on the operation of a clandestine methamphetamine laboratory in the Mowe Forest area of Ogun State. The defendants were docked on Friday, 10 July 2026, before Justice Musa Kakaki, marking one of the most significant drug busts in Nigeria's recent history.
The 11-count charge, filed by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), accuses the syndicate of conspiring between February and May 2026 to establish a super clandestine laboratory for the preparation, processing, and production of methamphetamine, in violation of Section 14(b) of the NDLEA Act. The agency alleged that the defendants manufactured and possessed 2,419.48 kilograms of methamphetamine, a psychotropic substance classified alongside cocaine and heroin, with an estimated street value of over N480 billion. The indictment also includes charges of managing and financing a drug trafficking organisation, unlawfully transporting precursor chemicals—including toluene, phenyl-2-propane (P2P), phenyl acetic acid, acetone, and hydrochloric acid—from Lagos to the Mowe laboratory using vehicles such as a Toyota Tacoma, a Mercedes Benz, and a Toyota Highlander.
The defendants are Anochili Innocent, 63; three Mexican nationals—Juan Carlos Meza Torrero, 49; Nemecio Martinez Felix, 46; and Jesus López Valles, 40—and six Nigerians: Nwankwo Sunday Christian, 41; Egwuonwu Uchenna Victor, 38; Igwe Abuchi Remijus, 43; Ifeanyichukwu Chibuike Joshua, 23; Omonughwa Kingsley Orike, 45; and Nwobum Emeka, 59. According to the NDLEA, the suspects were arrested during coordinated operations in Ogun and Lagos states between 16 and 18 May 2026. The alleged kingpin, Anochili Innocent, was arrested at his luxury residence in the Lakowe area of Lekki, Lagos, while the three Mexican nationals and the other Nigerian suspects were apprehended at the hidden laboratory inside the Mowe Forest, Ijebu East Local Government Area of Ogun State.
All defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges. Justice Musa Kakaki ordered their remand at the Lagos Correctional Centre and adjourned the case to 16 and 22 July 2026 for trial and the hearing of their bail applications. The court's decision to remand the suspects followed the conclusion of the arraignment, which had been previously stalled on 3 July 2026 due to preliminary objections raised by the defence, including challenges to the court's jurisdiction and the demand for an independent Spanish interpreter for the Mexican defendants.
Reacting to the arrest and arraignment, NDLEA Chairman, Mohamed Marwa, described the case as one of the agency's biggest breakthroughs against industrial-scale drug manufacturing, warning that Nigeria will not become a base for international drug cartels. The NDLEA had earlier disclosed that the laboratory was a super clandestine facility, and the precursor chemicals recovered at the site, including 358kg of toluene, 1,834kg of hydrochloric acid, and 22.5kg of acetone, were intended for methamphetamine production. The agency also noted that two of its officers deployed to secure the laboratory had fallen ill since the arrests and were receiving treatment, while residents of the surrounding community had demanded the immediate removal of the hazardous facility.
The case highlights the growing threat of transnational drug trafficking networks operating within Nigeria's borders, with the NDLEA vowing to intensify its crackdown on illicit drug manufacturing and trafficking. As the trial progresses, the defendants remain in custody, and the court is expected to address the bail applications and jurisdictional issues at the next hearing.
