A police station located in the hometown of former Jigawa State Governor and ex-Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, is reportedly in a deteriorating condition, raising concerns over the ability of security personnel to effectively respond to growing security challenges in the area.

The police facility, located in Babura Local Government Area of Jigawa State, has reportedly developed serious structural problems, with residents expressing concern that the poor condition of the building could affect police operations at a time when communities across parts of northern Nigeria continue to face security threats, including banditry and criminal activities.

Residents and community members are said to be worried that a weakened security infrastructure could limit the effectiveness of officers stationed at the facility, particularly in responding quickly to emergencies and protecting surrounding communities.

The concerns come amid wider security challenges affecting parts of northern Nigeria, where authorities have continued to battle armed criminal groups involved in kidnapping, attacks on communities and other forms of organised violence. The northwest region has experienced prolonged insecurity, with criminal networks exploiting remote areas and difficult terrain to carry out attacks.

Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, who previously served as Jigawa State governor between 2015 and 2023 before becoming Nigeria’s Minister of Defence in 2023, is originally from Babura in Jigawa State. His tenure as defence minister came during a period of intensified national security concerns, particularly around terrorism and banditry.

Security experts have repeatedly stressed that effective policing requires not only trained personnel but also functional infrastructure, communication systems, operational equipment and facilities capable of supporting officers deployed to communities.

Residents are therefore calling on the relevant authorities, including the Jigawa State Government and the Nigeria Police Force, to urgently assess the condition of the station and take steps to rehabilitate the facility to ensure officers can operate in a safe and effective environment.

The situation has also renewed discussions about the condition of police facilities in rural communities across Nigeria, where many stations serve large populations despite limited resources and ageing infrastructure.

As insecurity remains a major concern in several parts of the country, community leaders say strengthening local security institutions, improving intelligence gathering and providing adequate operational support for security personnel are necessary steps toward protecting lives and property.

Authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding plans to renovate or rebuild the affected police station.
