The South African football community and the global sporting world are in mourning following the sudden death of Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams, who passed away at the age of 25 on Saturday, 11 July 2026. The news was confirmed by the South African Football Players Union (SAFPU), which expressed devastation over the untimely loss of a player who had only recently represented his country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Adams, who featured in all three of South Africa's group-stage matches at the World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, was a key figure in Bafana Bafana's historic campaign. He started the opening Group A fixture against the Czech Republic, playing just hours after learning of his grandmother's death, and was substituted at halftime. He also started against Mexico and came off the bench in the crucial 1-0 win over South Korea that secured the team's first-ever place in the knockout rounds, where they were eventually eliminated by co-hosts Canada.
The South African Football Players Union paid tribute to Adams, describing his loss as "immeasurable" and extending deepest condolences to his family, teammates, and clubs. "Jayden had only recently represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, carrying the hopes of the nation with pride, courage and distinction," SAFPU said in a statement. "South African football has lost a gifted player, a proud servant of the game and a young life that still had so much to offer." His club, Mamelodi Sundowns, also confirmed the passing, expressing heartfelt sorrow and asking that the family's privacy be honoured during this difficult time.
South Africa's Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, confirmed the death, stating that the cause had not yet been established and appealing to the media and public to refrain from speculation. "South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents, and our nation mourns alongside his family, his teammates and the millions of supporters who watched him grow from a promising academy prospect into a full Bafana Bafana international," McKenzie said. Police in South Africa have opened an investigation after the body of a 25-year-old man was found at a house in Schotschekloof, a suburb in central Cape Town, on Saturday morning.
Adams, who made his international debut against Mozambique in 2022, earned nine caps for South Africa and scored two goals, both in qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup. He was also part of the squad that finished third at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. At club level, he came through the youth structures at Stellenbosch FC before joining Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025. He quickly established himself as a key midfielder, helping the Pretoria-based club win the South African Premiership title in 2025 and the CAF Champions League in the 2025/26 season.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino offered his condolences, saying: "It's so incredibly sad to hear that South Africa midfielder Jayden Adams has passed away just weeks after featuring in his nation's historic FIFA World Cup campaign. My thoughts and condolences, as well as those of everyone at FIFA and the global football community, are with his family, friends and teammates." South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa and the South African Federation of Trade Unions also expressed their condolences. As the nation mourns the loss of one of its brightest footballing talents, the legacy of Jayden Adams—his humility, extraordinary talent, and pride in representing his country—will not be forgotten.
