The Zamfara State Government has confirmed that about 300 suspected terrorists were neutralised during a major security operation in Gummi Local Government Area of the state, marking what officials described as a significant breakthrough in the ongoing campaign against terrorism, banditry, and other violent crimes threatening peace and security in the North-West region. The development was disclosed in a statement issued by the State Commissioner for Information, Mahmud Dantawasa, who said the operation, carried out on July 9, 2026, dealt a decisive blow to criminal networks that have long terrorised communities across Zamfara State.

According to Dantawasa, the operation, which involved troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA and other security agencies, targeted armed groups involved in banditry, kidnapping for ransom, and cattle rustling in the Gummi district. The military operation lasted two days and was described as a "significant breakthrough" in the government's campaign to restore security across the region. Residents of Gummi told news agencies that soldiers and local vigilantes launched the campaign on Wednesday night against about 1,000 bandits who had stolen livestock. "The soldiers and the vigilantes killed more than 300 bandits in the fight which raged all night and the following morning," Abubakar Muhammad told Agency France-Presse.

In his statement, Governor Dauda Lawal commended the gallantry, professionalism, and sacrifices of the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies involved in the operation, noting that their efforts had renewed hope among residents of the state. Lawal reaffirmed his administration's commitment to supporting security agencies through logistics, intelligence sharing, and other lawful measures aimed at restoring lasting peace across Zamfara. "Their gallantry, professionalism, and sacrifices continue to inspire confidence among residents," the governor said, according to the statement. The governor also urged residents to work closely with security agencies by providing credible and timely information that could help uncover criminal hideouts and prevent future attacks.

The commissioner assured residents that the state government remained committed to protecting lives and property under the administration's Rescue Mission Agenda. He added that the government urged security forces to sustain the ongoing offensive against terrorists and bandits until every part of Zamfara is free from criminal activities. "The reported success of the operation shows that sustained collaboration and coordinated security efforts can effectively tackle criminal groups," Lawal said.

The Zamfara State Government congratulated the Nigerian Armed Forces on the reported achievement and encouraged the military to sustain the ongoing operations until all parts of the state are free from terrorists and armed bandits. The operation has been widely hailed by residents, with many expressing relief and gratitude for the military's decisive action against the criminal elements that have long held rural communities hostage.

The successful operation in Gummi comes amid a broader security push by the Federal Government and military authorities to restore peace to Nigeria's North-West, where armed groups have capitalised on weak governance, poverty, and vast ungoverned spaces to terrorise rural communities. The military has intensified air and ground operations in recent weeks, with troops recording significant successes across Zamfara, Katsina, and other states in the region. As the government continues its offensive, the people of Zamfara remain hopeful that the latest victory will mark the beginning of a sustained turnaround in the state's long-running battle against insecurity.
