The Nigerian security forces have recorded a significant victory in the ongoing fight against banditry in the North-West, with the reported elimination of Kachalla Sani Yellow, one of Zamfara State's most notorious and long-wanted bandit commanders, during a security operation in Anka Local Government Area. The high-profile elimination occurred on Friday, 10 July 2026, though conflicting accounts have emerged regarding the exact circumstances and agents responsible for the killing, according to multiple reports published on 11 and 12 July 2026.
Kachalla Sani Yellow was widely regarded as one of the most influential bandit commanders operating across the forest corridors of Anka, Bukkuyum, Maru and neighbouring local government areas in Zamfara State. He was accused of masterminding numerous attacks on rural communities, mass kidnappings for ransom, cattle rustling and violent raids that forced thousands of residents to flee their homes. His criminal network was heavily linked to widespread sexual violence, strategic highway ambushes, and coordinated operations targeting motorists and communities along the Anka–Bagega Road, making him one of the most wanted bandit leaders in Zamfara and neighbouring states.
According to Daily Post, Yellow was killed during an armed confrontation involving the Maiduguri Special Vigilantes, who were supporting ongoing counter-banditry operations in the area. Following the operation, his body was displayed to residents in Anka as confirmation of his death. New Telegraph also reported that Yellow was neutralised during a security operation in Anka Local Government Area, in what authorities described as another breakthrough in the ongoing campaign against armed criminal groups in the state. The Zamfara State Police spokesperson, DSP Yazid Abubakar, confirmed the killing to Daily Trust, stating that hunters and the Civilian Joint Task Force neutralised the bandit warlord after a gun duel in which they repelled a bandit attack.
Conflicting Accounts of His Death
While some sources attribute the killing to a coordinated security operation involving security operatives and members of the Maiduguri Special Vigilantes recently deployed to support counter-banditry operations in the state, other accounts have emerged painting a different picture. Multiple local sources told Newswatch that Yellow was shot dead on Friday, 10 July, at Dan Jibga Market by gunmen believed to be loyal to rival bandit leader, Dogo Gide. According to these sources, the assailants ambushed Yellow in broad daylight while he was conducting activities at the market, an incident residents described as further evidence of the growing rivalry among bandit factions competing for territory and influence across Zamfara.
Military authorities have not finalised which faction delivered the fatal blow, but have confirmed that his body was retrieved and processed by hybrid security forces operating in the sector. As of the time of filing this report, security authorities had yet to officially establish which of the two accounts accurately reflected the circumstances surrounding Yellow's death, according to Newswatch.
The killing of Kachalla Sani Yellow has triggered fears of regional instability, with neighbouring communities in Tsafe Local Government Area coming under sudden retaliatory assaults hours after the commander's death. Local sources told Newswatch that gunmen suspected to be loyal to another wanted kingpin, Adamu Aliero, invaded several communities, killing at least two residents and abducting more than 60 others. The attackers reportedly looted food items and livestock before retreating into nearby forests.
In response, troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA alongside the Nigeria Police Command have intensified tactical patrols and launched emergency rescue missions to track the armed bandits into their forest hideouts. The operation forms part of intensified security efforts across the Anka–Bagega–Gummi axis, where security forces, in collaboration with local vigilante groups, have reportedly recorded a series of successes against armed bandit groups in recent days.
The elimination of Kachalla Sani Yellow marks another major blow to the criminal networks terrorising communities across Zamfara State, and is expected to bolster ongoing efforts to curb banditry and improve security in affected parts of the state. However, the reprisal attacks serve as a stark reminder that the fight against banditry is far from over, and that sustained military pressure, combined with community cooperation, remains essential to restoring lasting peace to the North-West.
