Today, the Nigerian Nurses Forum, operating under the Elegant Nurses Forum, has called for an urgent and comprehensive investigation into a private clinic in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, over allegations of illegal nursing training, sexual exploitation, and the parade of unqualified individuals as certified nurses. The group also accused the Ogun State Ministry of Health of regulatory failure, alleging negligence or complicity in allowing the clinic to operate an illegal nursing programme without sanction.
The forum said the alleged activity took place at Elshaddai Clinic, also known as Ore Ofe Elshaddai Clinic, where individuals were reportedly trained, graduated, and publicly displayed as nurses without approval from recognised authorities. The Elegant Nurses Forum warned that nursing is a regulated profession and that allowing untrained people to operate as nurses puts patients at risk of serious harm, medical errors, and possible loss of life. It blamed weak oversight for the situation, accusing the state Ministry of Health of failing to stop the practice or allowing it to continue unchecked. The group condemned the practice as a serious threat to public safety and the integrity of the nursing profession, warning that such activities place unsuspecting patients at grave risk.
The nurses' body issued several demands, including the immediate shutdown of the clinic's alleged training programme, the arrest and prosecution of individuals involved in training and parading unqualified nurses, and the withdrawal of all individuals said to have been illegally trained. The forum also called for sanctions against any health officials found complicit and urged the state government to publicly outline steps to end quackery in the health sector, warning that they would continue to speak out until action is taken.
In a separate but related development, the Ogun State Police Command arrested a 28-year-old man, Victor Cletus, who allegedly posed as a medical doctor and sexually exploited a young woman he met on Snapchat. Cletus, a cleaner at Babcock University Teaching Hospital in Ilisan Remo, presented himself as a surgeon and convinced the victim to confide in him about a medical concern involving a lump in her breast. Rather than offering any medical help, the fake doctor sexually abused her and stole money from her Opay account. The victim's suspicion grew the following day when the fake doctor persisted in demanding sexual intimacy without conducting any medical procedure. She independently contacted Babcock University Teaching Hospital and was shocked to learn that Victor Cletus is not a doctor but a cleaner. The police spokesperson warned members of the public, especially young women, to exercise caution on social media platforms, where criminals disguise themselves with false identities to lure, manipulate, and extort innocent persons. The suspect is being investigated and will be prosecuted accordingly.
The case has highlighted the persistent challenge of quackery in Nigeria's healthcare sector and the urgent need for stronger regulatory enforcement to protect citizens from harmful and unethical practices. The Elegant Nurses Forum has also been involved in other advocacy efforts, including petitioning the Inspector-General of Police and the Oyo State Governor over alleged quackery, extortion, unsafe delivery practices, and workplace intimidation at a Primary Health Care facility in Ibadan. The forum has also demanded the removal of the Head of Nursing Services at the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, over an assault case.
The forum's demands include the immediate shutdown of the alleged illegal nursing training programme, the arrest and prosecution of all individuals involved in training and parading unqualified nurses, and the withdrawal of all individuals said to have been illegally trained. The group has also called on the Ogun State Government to strengthen regulatory oversight and enforce stricter penalties for quackery to protect public health and restore confidence in the healthcare system. As the calls for investigation intensify, the Ogun State Government and relevant authorities are under increasing pressure to act decisively. The Nigerian Nurses Forum has vowed to continue its advocacy until justice is served and the safety of the public is guaranteed.
