In a memo posted yesterday on X, Lagos State Police Command has issued a public appeal for assistance in identifying the family of an 83-year-old man, Mr Oriowo Gabriel, who was found by a kind-hearted member of the public and subsequently taken into protective custody at the Ipaja Division, where he is currently safe and well cared for. According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the elderly man was found in a distressed state and was taken to the Ipaja Police Station for safety and care.

Despite efforts by the police to trace his family using the addresses provided by Mr Oriowo, all attempts have proven unsuccessful, as the addresses were visited and no one was able to identify or locate his relatives. The police said they have not been able to identify the family members of the elderly man, who is currently in protective custody at the Ipaja Division. The command has therefore appealed to anyone who knows Mr Oriowo Gabriel or has any information that could assist in reuniting him with his family or loved ones to contact the Divisional Police Officer, Ipaja Division, on +234 803 799 3827.

The Lagos State Police Command has expressed its commitment to ensuring the safety and welfare of all residents, including vulnerable members of the public. The appeal comes as part of the command's ongoing efforts to protect the elderly and other vulnerable persons in the state. The police have urged members of the public to come forward with any information that could help reunite Mr Oriowo with his family. The command has assured that all information provided would be treated with utmost confidentiality and acted upon promptly.

The case of Mr Oriowo Gabriel highlights the challenges faced by the elderly, some of whom may become separated from their families due to age-related conditions such as dementia or other cognitive impairments. The Lagos State Government has previously established the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs and other agencies to address the needs of vulnerable populations, but the police appeal underscores the importance of community cooperation in ensuring the safety and welfare of all residents. The Lagos State Police Command has urged residents to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious or vulnerable persons to the nearest police station, assuring the public that all reports would be treated with urgency and compassion.
