The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), under the leadership of its National Working Committee (NWC) chaired by Abdulrahman Mohammed, has announced the successful uploading of the names of its presidential candidate, running mate, and National Assembly candidates to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Candidate Nomination Portal, marking another significant milestone in the party's preparations for the 2027 general elections. The announcement was made in a statement issued on Sunday, 12 July 2026, by the party's National Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed, who described the development as a clear demonstration of the party's commitment to full participation in the upcoming polls.

The electoral umpire had initially set July 11 as the deadline for political parties to complete the submission of presidential and National Assembly candidates. However, following appeals from the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) on behalf of political parties that faced technical and administrative challenges, INEC extended the deadline to midnight on Tuesday, 14 July 2026. Despite the extension, the PDP disclosed that it met the original July 11 deadline, completing the upload ahead of the new timeline. The party also confirmed that it is awaiting the completion of the upload of its governorship and State Houses of Assembly candidates, which are expected to be concluded before the new deadline.

In a statement, Mohammed said: "I am pleased to inform all PDP members and Nigerians that our great Party, under my leadership, has successfully uploaded the names of our Presidential Candidate, his Running Mate, and our National Assembly candidates onto the INEC Candidate Nomination Portal." He added: "This is a clear demonstration of our commitment to the promise we made that, under my leadership, the PDP will fully participate in the 2027 General Elections. Today, we have taken another decisive step towards fulfilling that promise." Mohammed also congratulated all PDP members across Nigeria and around the world, urging them to continue building a stronger, more united party.

The PDP has settled on Senator Sandy Onor as its presidential candidate, with Babangida Umaru, the National Vice Chairman (North East) of the Wike-backed faction, as his running mate. The party's candidates are vying for all available positions across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, in addition to the presidency. The PDP is currently polarised into two camps: one led by Abdulrahman Mohammed, backed by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, and the other led by former Minister Tanimu Turaki, supported by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde. However, the Mohammed-led NWC is currently recognised by INEC, following a Supreme Court judgment that nullified the party's Ibadan convention. The Turaki camp recently filed a suit to compel the electoral umpire to recognise it as the authentic leadership of the party.

The PDP joins several other political parties that have successfully completed the nomination process. The African Democratic Congress (ADC) announced the successful upload of its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and his running mate, Rotimi Amaechi. The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) also reported a smooth exercise, with its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Mohammed Ishaq, confirming that the party encountered no difficulty uploading its candidates' particulars. Meanwhile, the Labour Party (LP) certified about 1,211 candidates for the 2027 elections, covering 99 senatorial candidates, 307 House of Representatives candidates, and 776 State House of Assembly candidates.

The successful upload of candidates to the INEC portal marks a critical step in the electoral process, as parties must submit their candidates' details to be eligible to contest the 2027 general elections. INEC had issued login codes to political parties between June 26 and June 30, enabling them to access the nomination portal for the submission of presidential, vice-presidential, and National Assembly candidates. The PDP's completion of the upload, despite months of factional disputes and rival leadership claims, demonstrates the party's ability to overcome internal challenges and present a unified front ahead of the polls. As the party awaits the conclusion of its governorship and State Houses of Assembly submissions, the focus now shifts to the broader electoral contest and the party's efforts to build momentum for the 2027 elections.
