Troops of Sector 7, Operation ENDURING PEACE, have successfully disrupted a suspected arms trafficking syndicate and recovered a cache of illegal firearms during a coordinated, intelligence-led operation in Kaduna State, marking a significant blow to criminal networks operating along the Jos–Kaduna–Niger axis.

Acting on credible intelligence regarding the movement of illicit arms from Jos, Plateau State, to Niger State, troops conducted a targeted stop-and-search operation in the early hours of Monday, 13 July 2026. According to a statement by the Nigerian Army, the operation followed intelligence that suspected arms racketeers were transporting weapons in an ash-coloured Mercedes-Benz vehicle. Security personnel identified, tracked, and intercepted the vehicle at the Samaru Checkpoint in Zangon Kataf Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

A thorough search of the vehicle led to the recovery of three locally fabricated AK-47 rifles and four submachine guns (SMGs), which had been carefully concealed within the vehicle. The Nigerian Army disclosed that the recovery of the seven illegal firearms represents a major breakthrough in ongoing efforts to curb the proliferation of illegal arms and dismantle criminal networks threatening national security.

In the course of the operation, one suspect attempted to evade arrest and was shot while trying to escape. He was promptly evacuated to the Sector 7 Medical Centre in Kafanchan, where he is currently receiving treatment. Preliminary investigations indicated that the weapons were allegedly supplied by two suspected arms dealers based in Jos and were being transported to an intended recipient in Niger State.

Describing the operation as a major blow to illegal arms trafficking, the Nigerian Army said, "This successful interception underscores the firm resolve of the Nigerian Army to disrupt arms proliferation and dismantle criminal networks that threaten national security." The military reiterated its commitment to working with other security agencies to tackle insecurity and urged members of the public to support security operations by providing timely and credible information to help track criminal activities.

The successful interception comes amid escalating security concerns across the North-West and North-Central regions, where bandits, terrorists, and other criminal elements have increasingly relied on sophisticated arms trafficking networks to sustain their operations. The movement of illicit weapons from Jos to Niger State highlights the porous nature of state borders and the ease with which criminal syndicates transport arms across the country.

The Nigerian Army has intensified its operations under Operation ENDURING PEACE, a joint task force aimed at restoring stability in Southern Kaduna, Plateau, and other affected areas. The operation has recorded significant successes, including the neutralisation of terrorists, the arrest of suspected kidnappers, and the rescue of victims in several operations along major transit corridors. However, the proliferation of illegal arms remains a persistent challenge, fueling banditry, kidnapping, and communal violence across the region.

The recovery of the weapons in Kaduna is the latest in a series of successful arms interdiction operations by the military. In recent months, troops have intercepted large caches of ammunition and suspected IED materials along the Kaduna–Jos highway, disrupting supply routes linked to attacks in Plateau and neighbouring states. The latest operation underscores the military's determination to disrupt the supply chains that sustain criminal networks.

The interception of the arms shipment also raises questions about the role of local arms dealers and the sources of their weapons. Preliminary investigations have identified two suspected arms dealers based in Jos as the alleged suppliers of the seized weapons. The military has vowed to track down and apprehend the dealers and their collaborators, sending a strong message that the illegal arms trade will not be tolerated.

As the suspect continues to receive treatment at the Sector 7 Medical Centre, investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the trafficking network and identify other individuals involved in the illegal arms trade. The Nigerian Army has called on members of the public to continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies to aid the fight against criminal activities.

The successful interception of the arms shipment is a testament to the effectiveness of intelligence-led operations and the commitment of the Nigerian Army to protecting the lives and property of citizens. By disrupting the supply of illegal weapons, the military has dealt a significant blow to criminal networks and contributed to the broader effort to restore peace and security across the country.

As the investigation continues and efforts to apprehend the remaining suspects intensify, the Nigerian Army has reiterated its commitment to working closely with other security agencies and members of the public to deny criminal elements freedom of operation across the country. The military has also urged Nigerians to continue providing timely and credible intelligence to security agencies to support the fight against arms trafficking and other forms of criminality.

The operation in Kaduna serves as a stark reminder of the persistent threat posed by illegal arms trafficking and the need for sustained vigilance and cooperation among security agencies and the public. With the military's resolve to disrupt arms proliferation and dismantle criminal networks, the people of Kaduna and the nation at large can take some comfort in the knowledge that security forces are working tirelessly to protect their safety and security.
