The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company has confirmed a major power outage affecting the highbrow Maitama district and surrounding areas of the Federal Capital Territory, following the alleged invasion and unlawful encroachment on its C2 Maitama Substation by suspected land grabbers, an incident that has prompted the direct intervention of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. The disruption, which has plunged homes, businesses, diplomatic missions, and government institutions into darkness, was caused by extensive damage to vital electricity cables and other critical network infrastructure during the encroachment, making it unsafe and technically impossible to continue power supply from the facility. In a statement issued on Sunday, 12 July 2026, AEDC management revealed that the matter had been escalated to the highest levels of the Federal Capital Territory Administration, and that the Minister had been fully briefed and had personally intervened to facilitate an urgent resolution.
The crisis unfolded when suspected land grabbers, allegedly led by an Assistant Director of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), identified as Mr Chinedu Okoro, unlawfully invaded the AEDC C2 Maitama Substation, a critical electricity distribution facility serving one of Abuja's most prominent residential and diplomatic districts. According to AEDC, the encroachment resulted in the destruction of vital electricity cables and other network equipment, rendering the substation unsafe and technically impossible to operate. The distribution company said the substation, which serves homes, businesses, diplomatic missions, and government institutions within Maitama and adjoining areas, was forced to shut down operations, throwing the entire district into darkness.
In a strongly worded statement, AEDC condemned the encroachment on critical national infrastructure, warning that such actions disrupt electricity supply, hamper economic activities, and undermine the public interest. The company insisted that both the substation and the land on which it is located legally belong to AEDC and called for a thorough investigation into the activities of those involved and appropriate sanctions in line with the law. "We strongly condemn any encroachment on critical national infrastructure, as such actions deprive communities of essential electricity supply, disrupt economic activities and compromise public interest," the company said.
The intervention of Minister Nyesom Wike has raised hopes of a swift resolution to the crisis. In a follow-up statement on Saturday, 11 July 2026, AEDC confirmed that Wike had been fully briefed on the situation and had personally intervened to facilitate an urgent resolution of the issues responsible for the current power disruption affecting Maitama and adjoining areas. The company said it is working closely with the Minister, the FCT Administration, security agencies, and other relevant stakeholders to secure the substation, protect this critical electricity infrastructure, and expedite the restoration of electricity supply. AEDC expressed appreciation for the Minister's swift intervention and unwavering commitment to resolving the matter, while also appealing for the patience and understanding of affected customers during the challenging period.
The Maitama substation incident is not an isolated case. It reflects a broader challenge of land grabbing and encroachment on critical public infrastructure across Nigeria's major cities. The involvement of an FCDA official in the alleged encroachment has raised serious questions about institutional oversight and the protection of public assets. AEDC has petitioned the relevant authorities over the incident, insisting that both the substation and the land on which it is located legally belong to the company. The distribution company has called for a comprehensive investigation into the alleged encroachment and urged authorities to take appropriate action against those responsible in accordance with the law.
The incident has also highlighted the vulnerability of Nigeria's power infrastructure to illegal activities. The destruction of vital electricity cables and network equipment not only disrupts power supply but also imposes significant economic costs on businesses and residents. The Maitama district, home to several diplomatic missions, high-profile government institutions, and commercial establishments, relies heavily on a stable electricity supply for its operations. The prolonged outage has disrupted business activities, affected diplomatic operations, and caused significant inconvenience to residents.
AEDC has assured customers that restoration work would commence as soon as the substation is secured and the damaged infrastructure is rebuilt. The company expressed appreciation for the patience, understanding, and continued support of its customers during the challenging period. "AEDC remains fully committed to restoring electricity supply as quickly and safely as possible and appreciates the patience, understanding and continued support of our customers during this challenging period," the management said.
The intervention of Minister Wike is expected to expedite the resolution of the dispute and facilitate the restoration of power supply to the affected areas. The FCT Minister's personal involvement underscores the government's recognition of the critical importance of protecting public infrastructure and ensuring the uninterrupted supply of electricity to residents and businesses. As the investigation into the encroachment continues, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for stronger enforcement of laws protecting public assets and the importance of safeguarding critical national infrastructure from illegal activities. For the residents and businesses of Maitama, the hope is that the lights will soon come back on, and that those responsible for the disruption will be held accountable.
