Human rights activist and African Action Congress presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has offered to support embattled disc jockey and TikTok personality Ademola Abiodun, popularly known as DJ Chicken, following his arraignment over alleged threats against Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu. In a post shared on his X handle on Monday, 13 July 2026, Sowore said he was ready to advocate for the content creator and help him challenge what he described as "burdensome charges" filed against him by the Nigeria Police Force.

"If anyone knows how to reach DJ Chicken's family or relatives, I will be happy to advocate for him and help him challenge the burdensome charges brought against him by the jobless @PoliceNG," Sowore wrote. The former presidential candidate criticised the prosecution of young Nigerians, insisting that DJ Chicken should not be detained over the allegations. "I want to help get DJ Chicken out of prison because I do not believe he deserves to spend a day behind bars; he is entitled to his liberty under the law. Young Nigerians need opportunities, guidance, and justice, not persecution and endless incarceration," he added.

DJ Chicken was arraigned on Friday, 10 July 2026, before a Magistrate's Court in Ogba, Lagos, on a three-count charge bordering on alleged threat to kill, conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace, and offences under the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015. The charges stem from a viral video in which the social media personality, while speaking in Yoruba about the 2027 presidential election, allegedly threatened to kill Seyi Tinubu if President Bola Tinubu secured re-election. In the now-deleted clip, he was heard saying: "Tinubu, you cannot win. If you enter, I will kill Seyi Tinubu. I will not say more than that."

Following widespread public criticism, DJ Chicken released another video in which he retracted the statement, saying it was a joke intended to attract attention and insisting he had no intention of harming the President's son. "I only want to use Baba to shine. I only want to use Baba and Seyi Tinubu to gain fame. Baba will win for the second time. But I will collect my money," he said in an Instagram post. "Seyi Tinubu, you cannot die. I cannot kill you. We are only creating content. You know I am a comedian." Despite his retraction, the prosecution filed three counts against him.

Count I accused DJ Chicken of posting a video threatening to kill Seyi on his social media handles, an offence punishable under Section 232 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. Count II charged him with making and posting a grossly offensive and menacing message against Seyi, contrary to Section 24 of the Cybercrime Act, 2015. Count III alleged that his actions were likely to cause a breach of peace and were intended to intimidate or embarrass Tinubu, an offence under Section 168(d) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. DJ Chicken pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Magistrate M.F. Onamusi granted him bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties in like sum. The court stipulated that one surety must be a government worker, while the other must be a community leader who owns property in Lagos. Both sureties must present evidence of three years' tax clearance, Lagos State Residents Registration Agency (LASRRA) identification, National Identification Number (NIN), and utility bills. Additionally, one of the sureties must be a blood relation. The magistrate ordered that DJ Chicken be remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre pending the fulfilment of his bail conditions. The case was adjourned until 3 August 2026, for further proceedings.

Sowore's offer of support has generated fresh reactions online, with many Nigerians debating freedom of expression, cybercrime prosecutions, and the treatment of young content creators by law enforcement authorities. Some have welcomed Sowore's intervention as a necessary defence of civil liberties, while others have questioned whether threatening a public figure's life should be treated as a joke. As the case progresses, all eyes will be on whether DJ Chicken's legal team can secure his release before the next hearing and whether the charges will be sustained in court.
