The Lagos State Government has announced that floodwater which submerged parts of the Apongbon and Marina axis of Lagos Island following hours of intense rainfall on Monday, 13 July 2026, has since receded, with emergency response teams having been deployed to monitor the situation and provide necessary interventions. Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, made the announcement in a post on his official X handle on Tuesday, 14 July 2026, reassuring residents that the stormwater had subsided and that normalcy had returned to the affected areas.

According to Wahab, the state's emergency response team immediately mobilised to the area after reports of flooding emerged, to monitor the situation and provide the necessary interventions. "I am pleased to inform Lagosians that the stormwater has since receded, as evidenced by the image below with the timestamp. We appreciate your concern, patience, and continued cooperation," Wahab stated. The commissioner also used the opportunity to reiterate the government's commitment to building a more flood-resilient Lagos State, emphasising that sustained government interventions and collective responsibility would continue to be key to addressing the perennial challenge of flooding in the state.

The development comes amid growing concerns over flooding in Lagos, which has witnessed several episodes of severe flooding in recent weeks following heavy downpours that have submerged roads, displaced residents and disrupted economic activities. The government has attributed the persistent flooding to a combination of factors, including blocked drainage channels, illegal construction on flood plains, and the effects of climate change. Recent enforcement actions have also targeted illegal structures and traders occupying pedestrian bridges, while the government has continued to warn residents against dumping refuse in drainage channels and other unauthorised areas.

The swift response by the government and the reassurance that the floodwater had receded have been welcomed by residents and commuters who rely on the Apongbon and Marina corridors for their daily activities. However, many have called for more permanent solutions to the perennial flooding challenge, including the dredging of canals, improved drainage systems, and stricter enforcement of environmental laws. As Wahab noted, the government remains committed to working towards a more flood-resilient Lagos, but residents have also been urged to play their part by disposing of waste responsibly and avoiding actions that could obstruct drainage channels.
