A woman and her daughter have lost their lives following a violent attack by suspected gunmen at Katul Crossing Community in Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State, marking yet another tragic incident in the wave of insecurity that has plagued Southern Kaduna in recent months. The gunmen reportedly stormed the community at around 8 p.m. on Monday night, July 13, 2026, unleashing a barrage of gunfire that left the daughter dead at the scene and her mother critically wounded. The mother was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition but later succumbed to her injuries, bringing the death toll from the attack to at least four, according to local sources.

Reports indicate that two other victims are also expected to be buried once their respective families finalise burial arrangements, though their identities and the circumstances surrounding their deaths remain unclear. Residents of the community, still in shock from the assault, have been left grieving the loss of their neighbours and loved ones, with the attack adding to the growing list of violent incidents that have turned life in parts of Southern Kaduna into a daily struggle for survival. The assailants, armed with sophisticated weapons, reportedly fled the scene immediately after the attack, leaving behind a trail of devastation and unanswered questions.

The Monday night attack is the latest in a series of violent incidents that have rocked Kachia Local Government Area, a region that has become a hotspot for banditry, kidnapping, and communal violence. Just days earlier, armed terrorists invaded Banono Ungwan Aku community in Kufana District of neighbouring Kajuru Local Government Area around midnight on Friday, July 10, abducting eight residents identified as Martha Yakubu, Maryamu Monday, Blessings Silas, Tatah Silas, Umaye Amos, Godwin Stephens, Omah Thaddeus and another resident. In a separate incident, the village head of Kuturan Buzu, Mr Felix Ladan, was kidnapped alongside six other residents during an early morning raid on communities in Maro Ward of Kajuru and Ayeh Kuturan Buzu in Agunu Ward of Kachia.

Residents of terror-stricken communities in Kajuru and Kachia local governments have made an urgent appeal to President Bola Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani to rescue them from incessant killings and abductions, saying they have continued to live in fear as armed terrorists repeatedly invade their communities. A community leader who spoke on condition of anonymity described the worsening security situation as unbearable and appealed to both the Federal and Kaduna State governments to urgently deploy more security personnel to the affected communities. "We understand that the government, especially under Governor Uba Sani, is doing a lot to ensure everyone is safe in Kaduna. So we felt that until our people in Kajuru and Kachia can also sleep well in their homes, our efforts remain a mirage," the source said. "We are praying for the safe return of all those abducted. Our people can no longer sleep with their two eyes closed because of the incessant attacks."

The killing of the mother and daughter at Katul Crossing comes barely two weeks after a similar attack on Ungwan Atiku village in the same local government area, where armed terrorists killed one person and abducted 11 others, including three nursing mothers and their infants. In that incident, which occurred on Sunday, June 28, the attackers shot and killed Mr Joseph Simon before taking away 11 residents, including Deborah David and her infant, Rejoice Jonathan and her infant, Deborah Aminu and her infant, Loise Geoffrey, Gerard Geoffrey, Mercy Timothy, Jummai Sunday, and Wisdom Doctor. One of the abductees later escaped and returned to the community, leaving 10 persons still in captivity. Residents have alleged that security agencies often failed to respond promptly to distress calls during attacks, leaving communities defenceless.

A resident of Ungwan Atiku, Mr Gideon Ezekiel, told reporters that bandits had been terrorising communities in the area for over three years through repeated attacks, kidnappings and killings. He said residents had repeatedly reported the attacks to the Kachia Local Government authorities, traditional rulers and security agencies, including requests for the establishment of a security checkpoint at Angwan Koro junction, which he claimed serves as a major route used by the attackers. "For more than three years, we have been pleading for a checkpoint at the junction because that is the route the bandits use to access our communities. We have reported these incidents to the local government and traditional rulers, but there has been no response," he said.

As of the time of filing this report, authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the Monday night attack at Katul Crossing, and further details remain unclear. The Kaduna State Police Command and the Ministry for Internal Security and Home Affairs have also yet to issue an official statement on the attacks, despite repeated attempts by journalists to reach the command's spokesperson, DSP Mansir Hassan. The lack of official communication has only deepened the anxiety among residents, who are demanding answers and action from the government.

The tragic attack has left residents mourning the loss of the victims, with many questioning how long the violence will continue before meaningful intervention arrives. The killing of a mother and her daughter in such brutal circumstances has struck a particularly raw nerve, highlighting the vulnerability of women and children who often bear the brunt of these attacks. As the community grapples with grief and fear, the appeal to President Tinubu and Governor Sani grows louder: protect our communities, end the killings, and restore peace to a region that has suffered far too long.
