The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has commenced a comprehensive traffic enforcement exercise across the state in response to the rising incidence of road crashes, declaring that the operation will target major traffic violations and ensure that offenders are arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law. Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, who disclosed this in a statement in Uyo on Wednesday, said the Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, would personally supervise the operation across the state to ensure its effectiveness and restore order on the roads.
John said the enforcement exercise targets major traffic offences, including one-way driving, excessive speeding, use of covered or concealed vehicle registration number plates, unlawful operation of motorcycles on restricted routes, as well as other traffic-related violations that endanger public safety. The police spokesperson emphasised that the operation is a proactive public safety initiative aimed at restoring order on the roads, preventing avoidable accidents, and safeguarding all road users. "The Command wishes to emphasize that this operation is a proactive public safety initiative aimed at restoring order on the roads, preventing avoidable accidents, and safeguarding all road users," the police spokesperson said.
The PPRO warned that anyone found violating any of the identified traffic laws and regulations will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law. He, however, assured that law-abiding residents have nothing to fear, as the exercise is designed solely to ensure public safety and promote responsible road use. "The Akwa Ibom State Police Command therefore calls on motorists, commercial drivers, tricycle and motorcycle operators, and all road users to comply strictly with traffic regulations and cooperate with officers deployed for the exercise," the statement added.
The operation, personally supervised by CP Azare, is aimed at restoring sanity on the state's roads, protecting lives and property, and enforcing strict compliance with traffic regulations. Police described the exercise as a proactive public safety initiative designed to reduce avoidable accidents and improve order on highways across Akwa Ibom, stressing that offenders would be arrested and prosecuted in line with the law. The Command, however, assured law-abiding residents that the operation is not intended to harass motorists but to promote responsible road use and ensure safer roads for everyone.
CP Azare urged motorists, commercial drivers, tricycle operators, motorcyclists, and other road users to obey traffic rules and cooperate with officers deployed for the exercise. The Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining the enforcement campaign as part of broader efforts to curb road fatalities, improve traffic discipline, and safeguard lives across Akwa Ibom State.
The enforcement exercise comes amid growing concerns over the rising cases of traffic violations involving road users who unlawfully operate against traffic, a practice the police have described as a serious threat to public safety. According to the police, one-way driving remains a major cause of road crashes, injuries, loss of lives and destruction of property across the state. The Command had previously issued stern warnings to motorists, commercial drivers, tricyclists, motorcyclists and cyclists who deliberately drive against the flow of traffic on roads across the state.
CP Azare, who was appointed as the 34th Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State in January 2025, is known for his dedication, excellent communication skills, and zero tolerance for corruption. He has previously reiterated that enforcement will be carried out "without fear or favour," urging motorists, especially public officials and security aides, to comply in the interest of public safety. The Command has also deployed special surveillance squads to curb traffic violations and has warned all motorists and road users against the flagrant violation of traffic laws.
