Firefighters from the Kwara State Fire Service successfully contained a fire outbreak at a commercial building in the Tanke area of Ilorin, preventing extensive property damage in the early hours of Wednesday, July 15, 2026. The incident, which occurred at a storey building beside Terminus Motor Park along University Road, Tipper Garage, Tanke, Ilorin, was triggered by a midnight power surge, according to preliminary investigations by the fire service.
The Kwara State Fire Service received a distress call at approximately 2:19 a.m., reporting a fire outbreak at the commercial building. Firefighters were immediately deployed to the scene and arrived to find a storey building comprising six shops and one kiosk engulfed in flames. Through swift and coordinated firefighting operations, the crew successfully contained the blaze, restricting the damage to only one kiosk, while all six shops were saved from destruction.
A statement issued by the Public Relations Officer and Head of the Media Unit of the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, confirmed the details of the operation. According to the statement, the emergency response team arrived promptly at the scene and found the building engulfed in flames. The firefighters coordinated their efforts and successfully contained the blaze before it could spread to the entire building.
Preliminary findings by the Kwara State Fire Service indicated that the fire outbreak was caused by a power surge, underscoring the dangers associated with electrical fluctuations. The agency warned that such surges can easily ignite fires, particularly in commercial buildings with high electrical loads.
Reacting to the incident, the Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Chief Fire Superintendent (CFS) Alabi Muhammed, praised the professionalism, courage, and prompt response of the firefighters whose efforts prevented a more catastrophic outcome. He noted that the timely intervention of the fire crew saved the six shops from destruction, preventing what could have resulted in extensive property loss.
CFS Alabi Muhammed also took the opportunity to urge residents and business owners to take electrical safety seriously. He advised that all electrical installations should be carried out by qualified professionals and that electrical appliances should be switched off whenever they are not in use. The Fire Service Director further advised property owners to install appropriate surge protection devices to safeguard their buildings and businesses against fires caused by sudden power fluctuations.
The successful containment of the fire in the Tanke area highlights the critical role of emergency responders in preventing major disasters. The Kwara State Fire Service continues to urge the public to remain vigilant and adhere to safety guidelines to minimize the risk of fire outbreaks in the state.
