The Bauchi State Police Command has uncovered a suspected car theft syndicate with the arrest of two suspects and the recovery of two vehicles believed to have been stolen, in an intelligence-led operation that dealt a significant blow to criminal networks operating in the state. The operation, carried out on July 12, 2026, at approximately 10:30 p.m., was executed by operatives of the Surveillance and Anti-Narcotics Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department in the Sabon Kaura area, located behind the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Yelwa Campus, Bauchi. The breakthrough followed credible intelligence received from members of the public, underscoring the growing effectiveness of community-police collaboration in tackling crime.

The police identified the suspects as 25-year-old Musa Abdulkarim of Kandahar, Bauchi Local Government Area, and 35-year-old Yahaya Mohammed of Dabe village in Gamawa Local Government Area. According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the command's spokesperson, SP Nafiu Habib, Abdulkarim was arrested in possession of a dark ash Toyota Corolla with Lagos registration number MUS 784 NC, while Mohammed was apprehended with a silver Toyota Camry bearing Kaduna registration number DKA 903 SL. Preliminary investigations indicated that both vehicles were reasonably suspected to have been stolen, and detectives have since intensified efforts to uncover the full extent of the syndicate's operations.

The Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has directed detectives to carry out a thorough investigation to uncover the full network of the suspected syndicate and recover any additional stolen property. Aliyu commended the operatives for their professionalism and swift response, reaffirming the command's commitment to tackling vehicle theft and other criminal activities across the state. He urged residents to continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies to support crime-fighting efforts.

In a related advisory, the police cautioned vehicle owners to install anti-theft devices and verify vehicle documents before purchasing used vehicles to avoid dealing in stolen property. The command's latest operation adds to a series of recent successes in curbing vehicle theft and other property-related crimes in Bauchi State. Just days earlier, the police had recovered a stolen vehicle and arrested three suspects in a separate operation. The ongoing crackdown reflects the command's determination to dismantle criminal networks and enhance public safety across the state. As investigations continue, residents have been assured of the police's unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property and bringing all perpetrators of crime to justice.
