The second phase of the Rainforest Basketball League 2026 has officially commenced in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, bringing together athletes from 11 states across Nigeria's South-South and South-East regions for a weeklong competition that promises to showcase the nation's emerging basketball talent. The opening ceremony, held at the Umuahia Township Stadium, was attended by top government officials, including the Honourable Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Sir Nwaobilor N. Ananaba, alongside the Special Adviser to the Governor on Sports, Mr Raymond Ukwa, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Pastor Mrs Jane Maxwell Igwe, and the Director of Sports, Abia State Sports Council, Comrade Obioma George.
Welcoming the athletes to Abia State, Commissioner Ananaba reaffirmed the Abia State Government's commitment to creating opportunities for young people to develop their talents and build successful careers both within Nigeria and abroad. He cited the inspiring journeys of Ebuka Okorie, an Imo-born basketball player who rose from the region to the NBA, and Ugonna Onyenso, an Abia-born basketballer who also progressed to the NBA after playing on the same court now hosting the competition. The celebration of these achievements was the highlight of the ceremony, inspiring the young players to believe that the path from local courts to the highest level of the game remains attainable through hard work and perseverance.
The Commissioner urged the athletes to uphold the values of sportsmanship and camaraderie throughout the tournament, reminding them that dedication, discipline and consistency could open doors to greater opportunities. He said the state government remained committed to using sports as a tool for youth development and social cohesion, and that the Rainforest Basketball League represented a vital platform for discovering and nurturing the next generation of basketball stars.
