The Lagos Waste Management Authority has intensified its enforcement efforts against illegal waste dumping, arresting four additional environmental offenders today and bringing the total number of arrests since Tuesday, July 14, 2026, to 16. The latest offenders, apprehended on Friday, July 17, 2026, have been identified as Chijekwu Okafor, 22; Abubakar Muhammed, 24; Jubril Isa, 23; and Henry Omoro, 35. They have been transferred to the Lagos State Task Force for prosecution in accordance with the state's environmental laws.
The arrests form part of LAWMA's sustained campaign to curb indiscriminate waste disposal, a practice that has continued to threaten public health, clog drainage systems, and contribute to the perennial flooding that plagues the state during the rainy season. The authority has made it clear that illegal waste disposal is a violation of Lagos State environmental laws and that it will continue to identify, apprehend, and prosecute offenders as part of its commitment to keeping Lagos clean and livable.
LAWMA's Managing Director, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, had earlier warned that the agency would not relent in its efforts to enforce environmental regulations. He stated that the agency would continue to carry out surveillance and enforcement operations to apprehend those who engage in illegal waste disposal, particularly in areas where such activities have become endemic. The agency has been monitoring black spots across the state and has urged residents to report any illegal dumping activities to the appropriate authorities.
The recent arrests follow a similar operation earlier in the week, which saw 12 offenders apprehended across Lagos Island, Yaba and Ikorodu. Those arrested included a school guard who was caught dumping refuse into a drainage channel, an act that was recorded and shared widely on social media, sparking public outrage. The swift response by LAWMA and the subsequent arrest of the offender were hailed by residents as a positive step toward enforcing environmental compliance.
The Lagos State Government has repeatedly warned that environmental violations will not be tolerated and that offenders will face the full weight of the law. The government has urged residents to dispose of their waste through approved channels and to patronise only licensed waste collectors. The enforcement operations are expected to continue as the government intensifies its efforts to improve sanitation and reduce the risk of flooding in the state.
With 16 arrests in just four days, the message from LAWMA is clear: the era of impunity for illegal waste dumping is over. The agency has called on residents to cooperate with enforcement teams and to take responsibility for keeping their communities clean. As the rainy season progresses, the government has reiterated that keeping drainage channels clear of refuse is a collective responsibility that requires the active participation of all Lagosians.
