Several foreign nationals and Nigerian citizens have been arrested over their alleged involvement in illegal mining activities in Amba, Kokona Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.
The suspects were arrested on Friday, July 17, during a security operation led by the Deputy Governor of Nasarawa State, Dr Emmanuel Agbadu Akabe, as authorities intensified efforts to tackle unauthorised mining activities in the area.
Reports indicate that the operation targeted mining activities allegedly carried out without the required approval from relevant authorities. During the operation, security personnel reportedly apprehended individuals suspected of participating in illegal mining operations.
Illegal mining has remained a major concern in Nasarawa State, which is rich in solid mineral resources. Authorities have raised concerns over the environmental impact of unregulated mining, loss of government revenue and the activities of individuals operating outside established mining regulations.
The arrest comes amid wider efforts by federal and state authorities to sanitise Nigeria’s mining sector. In previous operations within Kokona Local Government Area, authorities have arrested foreign nationals and shut down mining sites accused of operating illegally.
Security agencies and mining regulators have also warned that illegal mining networks can involve multiple actors, including operators, financiers and local collaborators, making enforcement efforts dependent on intelligence gathering and cooperation from communities.
Nasarawa State has increasingly become a focus of mining regulation due to its mineral deposits, including lithium and other valuable resources. Authorities have said stronger monitoring and enforcement are necessary to ensure mineral resources contribute to economic development while protecting communities and the environment.
Details of the identities of those arrested, their nationalities and the specific charges they may face have not yet been fully disclosed. Investigations are expected to determine the extent of their alleged involvement and whether other individuals or groups are connected to the activities.
The latest arrests highlight the continuing challenge of illegal mining in Nigeria and the efforts by authorities to strengthen control over the country’s mineral resources.
