Troops of the Joint Task Force North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have recorded a significant breakthrough in the fight against terrorism in Zamfara State, killing several terrorists, recovering weapons and intercepting a suspected explosives courier transporting 180 units of 20mm Super Power explosives to terrorist elements. The operations, conducted on Friday, August 14, 2026, represent a major blow to the logistics networks that sustain terrorist groups across the North-West region.
In a statement issued on Saturday, August 15, 2026, the Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force North West, Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, disclosed that troops of Sector 2, while conducting an offensive clearance operation in Birnin Magaji Local Government Area, made contact with terrorists around Garin Kaso and engaged them in a fierce firefight. During the initial encounter, two terrorists were confirmed neutralised, and troops recovered two rifles, two magazines, nine rounds of ammunition and two motorcycles. The military said another group of terrorists subsequently attempted to ambush the troops from concealed positions, but the troops responded decisively and fought through the ambush, inflicting further casualties on the terrorists and forcing the surviving elements to flee. Although the exact number of terrorist casualties from the second encounter is yet to be confirmed, reports from communities in the area indicated that several terrorists with apparent gunshot wounds, as well as the bodies of their neutralised colleagues, were evacuated by the fleeing elements following the encounter.
In a separate but equally significant operation on the same day, troops of Sector 2 conducting routine snap checks on vehicles intercepted a suspected arms and explosives courier. The suspect, identified as 57-year-old Sani Umar, was allegedly transporting 180 units of 20mm Super Power explosives from Gusau Local Government Area of Zamfara State to suspected terrorist elements operating in Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State. A search of the suspect's vehicle led to the recovery of the explosives, and the suspect, his vehicle and the recovered items have been taken into custody for further investigation.
The Theatre Command described the operations as part of sustained efforts to simultaneously attack terrorist strongholds and disrupt the logistics networks that supply them with weapons, explosives and other resources required to perpetrate violence. The interception of the explosives courier is particularly significant, as it prevented a large cache of dangerous materials from reaching terrorist hands, potentially averting catastrophic attacks on civilian populations. The military has reiterated its commitment to sustaining the momentum of ongoing operations and denying terrorists and other criminal elements freedom of action across the North-West.
The successes recorded by Operation FANSAN YAMMA come amid a broader offensive against terrorist and bandit networks in the North-West, where communities have endured years of violence, kidnappings and extortion. The military's ability to combine offensive clearance operations with intelligence-led interdictions of logistics networks demonstrates a growing sophistication in its counter-terrorism strategy. By cutting off the supply lines that sustain terrorist groups, the military is gradually strangling the insurgency and denying terrorists the resources they need to continue their campaigns of terror.
For the people of Zamfara and Katsina states, the interception of 180 explosives and the neutralisation of terrorists offer a glimmer of hope that the tide may finally be turning against the criminals who have held their communities hostage. However, the military has warned that the fight is far from over, and that sustained pressure on terrorist networks is essential to achieving lasting peace. As Operation FANSAN YAMMA continues its offensive, the message to terrorists is clear: no matter how deep they hide or how carefully they conceal their supply lines, the long arm of the Nigerian military will find them.
