The Independent National Electoral Commission has formally declared the #OsunDecides2026 Situation Room closed, bringing to an end the central monitoring and oversight operations for the Osun State Governorship Election. The declaration was made by the Chairman of the Commission, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, following the successful conclusion of the election and the announcement of the final result in the early hours of Sunday, August 16, 2026.
Addressing staff at the Situation Room, Amupitan expressed profound appreciation for their dedication, sacrifice and professionalism throughout the electoral process. He commended staff at the commission's Headquarters, Osun State and Local Government offices, as well as personnel deployed to the field, particularly those who worked at the polling units and members of the technical teams. The Chairman acknowledged the long hours put in by staff, noting that many sacrificed time with their families and worked under demanding conditions to support the successful conduct of the election and safeguard the integrity of the electoral process. He also attributed the peaceful atmosphere that prevailed during the election to the grace and protection of Almighty God.
The Chairman described the Osun election as a milestone, not a destination, stressing that the lessons and experience gained must inform the commission's preparations for the 2027 General Election. He urged staff to sustain a higher level of vigilance, transparency, professionalism and commitment, while maintaining strict neutrality in the discharge of their responsibilities. "Let us learn from our experience, refine our strategies and approach the upcoming national task with renewed vigour and absolute neutrality. Let us remain steadfast in our duty, knowing that we are the gatekeepers of our nation's democracy," he said.
The closure of the Situation Room follows the declaration of the Osun governorship election results, which saw Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party secure a resounding victory with 511,067 votes, defeating his closest rival, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress, who polled 444,815 votes. The election, which featured 15 candidates, was conducted across 3,763 polling units, with 1,010,684 voters accredited to vote out of 2,339,544 registered voters.
The Osun governorship election was widely regarded as a test of the commission's readiness for the 2027 general elections. Despite isolated incidents of violence, technical glitches with the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, and allegations of vote-buying, the electoral process was largely peaceful, with the commission successfully collating and announcing results from all 30 local government areas within 24 hours of the close of polls. The European Union Election Observation Hub reported 323 electoral offences and 38 security incidents, with 103 cases involving alleged vote trading.
Amupitan called on staff to remain committed to the commission and to recognise the important role INEC plays in sustaining Nigeria's democracy. He formally declared the Situation Room closed, marking the end of the commission's central monitoring and oversight operations for the election. The Chairman's remarks underscored the importance of the lessons learned from the Osun election in shaping the commission's approach to the 2027 general elections, which are expected to be a defining moment for Nigeria's democracy.
