Tension erupted in Katsina metropolis on Sunday, August 16, 2026, when popular Kannywood actor Musa Mai Sana'a was confronted by angry youths and forced to flee the scene after he climbed the iconic "Welcome to Katsina" gate to sing praises of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and promote the All Progressives Congress administration. The dramatic confrontation, which was captured in multiple videos that have since gone viral on social media, has reignited debates about political intolerance and the safety of public figures who openly campaign for politicians in northern Nigeria.
According to multiple reports, the actor arrived at the Dandagoro area of Katsina metropolis with a megaphone and began cataloguing what he described as the President's achievements for the state, while standing on top of the entrance structure. The youths, however, were having none of it. They reportedly warned him to come down from the gate and stop praising Tinubu, telling him in no uncertain terms that "this is not a place to campaign for Bola." When the actor refused to descend, the situation quickly escalated, with some youths attempting to hit him with stones, sticks and other objects.
Security personnel were swiftly deployed to the scene and intervened to rescue the embattled actor. Footage from the incident showed security officers surrounding the vehicle conveying the actor, apparently to ensure his safety and prevent the confrontation from escalating further. According to Okay News, Musa fled the scene with the assistance of security operatives, leaving his cap behind as he was whisked away from the area. An X user who was at the scene posted a video showing the actor being escorted out of the area while the youths continued to insult him and shout him down.
The confrontation comes amid heightened political tensions across northern Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections, with public expressions of support for political parties and candidates occasionally drawing strong reactions. It also follows a similar incident in April 2026, when the same actor was reportedly assaulted by youths in Sharada, Kano, over his alleged support for the APC and President Tinubu. Industry figures subsequently condemned that attack, while veteran actor Bello Muhammad Bello criticised colleagues who openly campaign for the Tinubu administration.
The latest incident has renewed concerns about the treatment of public figures who express political views. Observers have called for political disagreements to be addressed through peaceful and democratic means rather than violence. As one commentator noted, citizens can reject a politician or his message through the ballot box without resorting to attacks or violence against supporters and campaigners.
In the videos circulating online, the youths could be heard chanting "It's a lie, we don't accept it," while others expressed anger over the actor's campaign. The incident has drawn widespread attention on social media platforms, with many Nigerians debating the role of entertainers in politics and the limits of political expression in a democracy. For now, Musa Mai Sana'a has escaped with his life, but the message from the youths of Katsina was clear: in their city, not everyone is ready to hear the praises of President Tinubu.
