The Federal Road Safety Corps has bolstered its volunteer force in Abia State with the induction of 200 new special marshals, charging them to exhibit discipline, patriotism, and exceptional service in their quest to make Nigeria's roads safer. The induction ceremony, held at the FRSC Sector Headquarters in Umuahia on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, marked a significant addition to the corps' human capacity in the state as it intensifies efforts to reduce road traffic crashes and fatalities.
Speaking during the ceremony, the Abia State Sector Commander, Ngozi Ezeoma, congratulated the inductees and described their decision to join the Corps Special Marshals as "a demonstration of commitment to safer roads and the preservation of human lives". She charged the new marshals to uphold integrity, professionalism, and respect for all road users, stressing that their conduct must consistently reflect the values and objectives of the corps. Ezeoma further urged them to work closely with regular marshals and actively support the corps' enforcement, public education, and road safety initiatives towards achieving a significant reduction in road traffic crashes in the state.
In his response, the State Coordinator of Special Marshals for the Abia Sector Command, Ven. Kingsley Wachi, described the Special Marshals as the legally empowered volunteer arm of the FRSC, noting that their roles extend beyond the reach of road safety administration into communities and various sections of society. He emphasized that the special marshals serve as critical force multipliers, helping to bridge the gap between the corps and the grassroots, where many road safety challenges originate.
Presenting the keynote address titled "Discipline, Patriotism and Volunteerism: The Hallmarks of an Effective Special Marshal," the Commissioner for Transport, Chimezie Ukaegbu, described the Special Marshal uniform as "a symbol of responsibility," stressing that while integrity earns respect, discipline makes authority worthy. He reminded the inductees that their voluntary service was a noble calling that required them to lead by example, both on and off the roads.
The induction comes at a time when the FRSC is doubling down on its 2026 corporate goal of reducing road traffic fatalities and injuries by at least 10 percent. In recent months, the Abia State Command has launched special intervention patrols codenamed "Operation KWUSI IHE MBEREDE OKPOROUZO," targeting overloading and speed violations to curb the growing menace of road crashes. The command has deployed regular marshals and special marshals, supported by patrol vehicles, ambulances, and tow trucks, to ensure maximum operational footprint across the state.
The Special Marshals scheme remains a vital component of the FRSC's strategy to improve road safety across Nigeria. As legally empowered volunteers, they complement the efforts of regular marshals, taking road safety advocacy and enforcement into communities, churches, markets, and schools. Their presence is particularly critical in Abia, where road traffic crashes have continued to claim lives despite sustained interventions by the corps.
For the 200 newly inducted marshals, the journey ahead is one of service, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment. As Sector Commander Ezeoma reminded them, their conduct will be a reflection of the corps' values. The uniform they now wear is not just a badge of honour but a call to duty—one that demands discipline, patriotism, and an unrelenting resolve to save lives on Abia's roads.
