A nurses' group has demanded an urgent independent investigation into the alleged abduction, detention, and extortion of a nurse by operatives of the Osun State Police Command, following her social media posts warning women about an alleged romance scam. The Elegant Nurses Forum has accused the police of arresting Shotuminu Rofiat Atinuke, a nurse undergoing a specialty programme at the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Yaba, Lagos, and forcibly transporting her to Osogbo, Osun State.
According to the group, the nurse's ordeal began after she participated in an online discussion about romance scams, where she warned women about a man identified as Adeleke, whom she accused of using emotional manipulation and false promises to defraud women. The forum claimed that Atinuke, who had previously been in a relationship with Adeleke, ended it after allegedly noticing "lies and inconsistencies." However, after her online warning, other women came forward with similar experiences, prompting Adeleke to allegedly contact Atinuke privately and threaten to publish her intimate pictures if she did not delete the posts.
The situation escalated when police officers, allegedly led by a Superintendent Ayobami, arrived at the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital in Yaba and arrested the nurse without showing any arrest warrant. She was then taken to Osogbo, Osun State, where she was allegedly detained for about four days without access to her school or family. The forum further alleged that on the fourth day of her detention, the nurse was placed in a vehicle where an officer allegedly stood behind her with a cocked firearm and ordered her to record apology videos. The group claimed that her phone was taken, videos were deleted, and the apology videos were subsequently posted.
In what the nurses' body described as a shocking twist, they alleged that about ₦1 million was collected from the nurse's relatives, with approximately ₦250,000 allegedly given to Adeleke and the remainder reportedly retained by the police as "bail money." The group questioned the legality of the arrest and detention, stating that the allegations of collusion between the alleged scammer and police officers are too serious to ignore. "We are not declaring anyone guilty. But these allegations are too serious to ignore. It looks like there may have been collusion between the alleged scammer and some officers. This must be investigated openly," the forum said.
The Elegant Nurses Forum called on the Inspector-General of Police to order an independent investigation into the nurse's arrest, transfer, and treatment, demanding that all officers involved, including Superintendent Ayobami, be investigated. The group also demanded a probe into the alleged ₦1 million payment and the reported ₦250,000 payment to Adeleke, insisting that the police explain the legal basis for any such payments. They further urged authorities to preserve all evidence, including CCTV footage from the hospital, police records, call logs, and financial records. As the investigation is yet to commence, the police have not publicly responded to the allegations, and the nurse, who has not been formally charged, is presumed innocent unless proven otherwise.
