The National Open University of Nigeria is in mourning following the brutal killing of its University Bursar, Mallam Nasiru Gusau Marafa, who was shot dead by gunmen along the Gusau-Marafa road in Zamfara State on Sunday, September 6, 2026. Marafa was reportedly attacked and shot while returning from Gusau, the state capital. The university confirmed his death in an official notice signed by the Registrar and Secretary to Council, Oladipo Adetayo Ajayi.
The university did not disclose the exact location of the attack or provide details about the identity or motive of the assailants. It also did not confirm whether the attackers were kidnappers, bandits, or armed robbers. Efforts to get a reaction from the Zamfara State Police Public Relations Officer, Abubakar Yazid, were unsuccessful as his line was unreachable.
Marafa, who was appointed Bursar of NOUN on September 17, 2022, for a five-year tenure, was described by the university as a dedicated and committed administrator who served the institution meritoriously and held various positions of responsibility. His death was described as a "profound loss." The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Uduma Oji Uduma, expressed condolences on behalf of the Governing Council, Management, Senate, staff, and students. The university prayed that Almighty Allah forgive his shortcomings, grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus, and give his family and the entire NOUN community the strength to bear the loss.
Marafa's Janaza prayer is scheduled to be held at the NOUN Jumaat mosque in Abuja at 1:30 p.m. on Monday. The killing adds to growing concerns over the security situation along major roads in Zamfara, where travellers continue to face threats from armed criminal elements. This incident comes amid persistent security challenges in Zamfara and other parts of Nigeria's North-West, where armed attacks and kidnappings have continued to pose a threat to residents and travellers.
