A man who had returned to Nigeria from abroad to prepare for his wedding has been beaten to death by a mob in the Lagos Island area, following an alleged hit-and-run incident. The victim, identified simply as Basit, was killed on Wednesday night, September 2, 2026, just weeks before he was due to walk down the aisle.
According to eyewitness accounts, the tragedy unfolded when Basit allegedly used his car to hit a male resident in the Patey area of the community. Instead of stopping, he reportedly drove away from the scene, prompting some residents to give chase. One resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Punch that Basit was coming from the other end of Freeman Street when the incident occurred. "A resident was trying to cross the road when he rammed him. The moment it happened, people thought he would wait, but he did not. He was later chased and caught before the mob descended on him," the resident said.
Another resident, Afolabi Lawal, described the brutal attack, stating that Basit was struck with dangerous weapons as the mob beat him. "He was hit with sticks and bottles on his head, which caused him to sustain a head injury. He went unconscious and later died," Lawal said. The mob reportedly fled the scene after discovering that Basit had become unresponsive. Basit's wedding was said to be about two weeks away.
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, could not be reached for comment on Sunday, as calls to her telephone line were unanswered and a text message had not been replied to as of the time of filing this report. However, a police source confirmed to Punch that some suspects had been taken into custody in connection with the incident. "Some suspects have been taken into custody, and the remains of the deceased have been deposited in the morgue," the source disclosed. The investigation is ongoing.
