The Osun State Police Command has taken a woman into custody following the sudden and mysterious death of a vigilante member in Ile-Ife, an incident that has thrown the Ooni Ilare community into a state of shock and confusion. The deceased, identified as Sunday, popularly known as Apetu, reportedly died shortly after a sexual encounter with the woman on Sunday afternoon, September 6, 2026. According to a situation report attributed to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. in the Odi-Olokun area of Ile-Ife, within the Ooni Ilare vicinity.
A video circulating on social media captured the harrowing moments of Apetu's distress. He was seen gasping, screaming, and pleading with the woman to give him urine as his condition rapidly deteriorated. Despite efforts at the scene, the vigilante member eventually died. His remains were subsequently deposited at the morgue of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC) in Ile-Ife. Following the incident, the woman was taken into custody at the Moore Police Division in Ile-Ife as authorities began their inquiries.
The cause of Apetu's death remains officially unclear. While some residents have attributed the incident to a traditional belief commonly described as a “thunderbolt,” there is no official confirmation that such a phenomenon was responsible for his death. The claim is linked to a local belief that a person affected by a supposed “thunderbolt” spell could transfer harm to another individual through sexual contact. Medical authorities, however, have not established this belief as a scientific explanation for sudden death.
A senior police officer from the Osun State Police Command confirmed that the command was aware of the reports and videos circulating online but cautioned residents against drawing conclusions before the investigation is completed. The command has urged members of the public to avoid spreading unverified claims and to allow investigators and relevant medical authorities to establish what actually happened. The conflicting accounts and the unusual circumstances surrounding the vigilante member's death have generated considerable concern among residents of Ile-Ife, who have been advised to remain calm while the investigation continues.
