Vice President Kashim Shettima has reiterated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s unwavering commitment to ensuring peace, security, and stability in the Gulf of Guinea, emphasizing ongoing reforms within the Gulf of Guinea Commission (GGC). Speaking on Tuesday during a courtesy visit by the Executive Secretary of GGC, Mr. Jose Mba Abeso, and his team to the Presidential Villa in Abuja, the Vice President highlighted Nigeria’s dedication to regional cooperation and alignment with the African Union's 2050 Integrated Maritime Strategy.

“On behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, I reaffirm Nigeria's strong commitment to the objectives of the GGC. Nobody can undermine the role of the Commission in fostering cooperation, peace, and sustainable development in the Gulf of Guinea,” Shettima stated. He further stressed that as Africa’s most populous nation and largest economy, Nigeria has strategic interests to protect, promote, and preserve in the region. “Be reassured that some of the issues you have raised, the President will give them the desired attention. We want the Gulf of Guinea to function effectively,” he added.

The Vice President also commended the GGC management for its leadership and assured the commission of Nigeria’s “unalloyed commitment to its ideals and objectives.”

During the visit, Mr. Jose Mba Abeso outlined the GGC’s reform agenda, which includes expanding membership to all 19 coastal states of the Gulf of Guinea and enhancing peace and security in the region. He also highlighted the need for regional stakeholders to engage insurance companies in reviewing high premiums charged for maritime transport of goods. Additionally, Mr. Abeso sought President Tinubu’s support in rallying other political leaders to operationalize the Combined Maritime Taskforce, in which Nigeria has played a leading role.

The meeting brought together key security and diplomatic officials, including Commodore M.S. Shettima, Force Commander of the Combined Maritime Taskforce; Air Vice Marshal Sayo Olatunde from Defence Headquarters; Ambassador Obinna Agbugba from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; and Adebowale Badejo from the GGC.

The discussions underscored Nigeria’s pivotal role in promoting maritime security and regional cooperation, reflecting the administration’s commitment to sustainable development and strategic collaboration across the Gulf of Guinea.
