The Federal Government of Nigeria has formally endorsed China’s newly launched Global Governance Initiative (GGI), describing it as a timely and valuable contribution to ongoing efforts to strengthen the international system.
The endorsement was conveyed at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Plus meeting held in Tianjin, China, on September 1, 2025. Nigeria expressed appreciation to the Government of the People’s Republic of China for introducing the framework, which builds on earlier efforts such as the Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative, and Global Civilization Initiative.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the GGI seeks to address critical challenges in global governance, including the need for broader representation, stronger adherence to international law, and more effective responses to climate change, digital inequality, and emerging technologies. Nigeria welcomed in particular the initiative’s emphasis on sovereign equality, rule of law, multilateralism, people-centered governance, and results-oriented action.
As one of Africa’s largest economies and a consistent participant in multilateral diplomacy, Nigeria said it views the GGI as an important platform for advancing shared priorities such as United Nations reform, inclusive governance in emerging domains like artificial intelligence, cyberspace, and outer space, and the promotion of equitable development.
Nigeria also highlighted the potential alignment of the GGI with its own national development goals, Africa’s Agenda 2063, and the principle of strategic autonomy. The government reaffirmed its readiness to work collaboratively with partners across the Global South to foster consensus, strengthen regional cooperation, and contribute to a sustainable and equitable world order.
By endorsing the initiative, Nigeria reiterated its commitment to a just, inclusive, and effective international system—one that reflects the aspirations of all peoples while upholding shared responsibility and mutual respect.
The statement was signed by Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in Abuja on Thursday, September 11, 2025.
