During the General Debate of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Vice-President H.E. Kashim Shettima delivered the national statement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, under the theme: “Better Together: 80 Years and More for Peace, Development, and Human Rights.”

In his address, the Vice-President emphasized the urgency of multilateral action to tackle global challenges, highlighting the need for the United Nations to reflect the world as it is today. He called for reforms to strengthen the UN’s relevance, efficiency, and responsiveness in addressing issues such as climate change, violent extremism, irregular migration, and the digital divide.

He underscored Nigeria’s case for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council, citing the country’s growth from a 20-million-person colony at the UN’s founding to a sovereign nation of over 236 million, its role as a stabilizing force in regional security, and its consistent participation in global peacekeeping operations. The statement also called for urgent international mechanisms to manage sovereign debt, ensuring emerging economies can access trade and finance while fostering sustainable growth.

The Vice-President stressed that countries hosting strategic minerals should benefit from their resources through investment, local processing, and job creation, noting that Nigeria’s experience in the Niger Delta illustrates the importance of equitable resource management. He also highlighted the critical need to close the digital divide, ensuring emerging economies are included in the technological revolution and have access to information, technology, and knowledge.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s contributions to global peace and security, the Vice-President reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to protecting human rights, promoting tolerance, and supporting peaceful resolutions to conflicts, including the two-state solution for Palestine. Nigeria reiterated its dedication to multilateralism, sustainable development, and shared prosperity, emphasizing that collective security and cooperation remain essential to global stability.
