At the ongoing 2025 Petroleum & Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) Energy and Labour Summit (PEALS) in Abuja, NNPC Limited’s Executive Vice President for Business Services, Mrs. Sophia Mbakwe, presented a paper on “Exploring the Link Between Industrial Harmony in the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry and Attaining National Production Target.”
Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, which remains a cornerstone of the nation’s economy, faces challenges from global energy transitions, domestic economic fluctuations, and workforce dynamics. Ensuring industrial harmony—where labour, management, and government work collaboratively—has been identified as a critical factor for sustaining production levels, attracting investment, and achieving national energy goals.
In her address, Mrs. Mbakwe emphasized:
-
The importance of collaboration between labour unions, the oil and gas industry, and government in meeting production targets.
-
Recognition of NNPC Ltd.’s in-house unions for fostering industrial peace through constructive engagement.
-
Commitment from NNPC Ltd. to workforce development, operational excellence, and partnerships with stakeholders.
Her remarks aligned with the Summit’s theme, which underscores industrial harmony as a catalyst for resilience in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, ensuring long-term energy security and sustainability.
Industrial disputes in the oil and gas industry can lead to production losses, supply disruptions, and economic setbacks, affecting both national revenue and energy security. By fostering mutual understanding and cooperation between management and staff, Nigeria can maintain steady output, attract foreign investment, and navigate global energy transition challenges.
The Summit reflects the growing recognition that labour relations and operational efficiency are inseparable from national energy strategy, especially as Nigeria seeks to meet domestic demand and global commitments.
Mrs. Mbakwe’s presentation underscores that industrial harmony is not just a workforce concern—it is a national imperative. By promoting dialogue, collaboration, and capacity development, Nigeria’s oil and gas industry can achieve its production targets, enhance energy security, and contribute to sustainable economic growth.
