The Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has officially received the credentials of Bangladesh’s newly appointed Permanent Representative to the United Nations Institutions and the WTO, H.E. Nahida Sobhan.

During a brief ceremony at the WTO headquarters in Geneva, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala extended a warm welcome to Ambassador Sobhan, expressing optimism about deepening cooperation with Bangladesh on global trade issues. She emphasized the importance of collaboration at a time when multilateral trade faces mounting challenges, including supply chain disruptions, climate-related economic risks, and the need for inclusive growth strategies.

“Warm welcome to you, Excellency. I look forward to our work together,” Dr. Okonjo-Iweala stated, reaffirming her commitment to building stronger ties with Bangladesh and other member states in advancing the organization’s reform agenda.

Ambassador Sobhan, a seasoned diplomat with extensive experience in multilateral affairs, is expected to play a central role in representing Bangladesh’s trade interests, particularly in areas such as access to global markets, fair trade rules for developing economies, and capacity-building for least-developed countries (LDCs).

Observers note that Bangladesh’s active participation in WTO engagements has become increasingly significant, given its status as one of the fastest-growing economies in Asia. The country’s transition from an LDC to a developing nation by 2026 underscores the urgency of securing fair terms of trade and ensuring that its industries remain competitive in the global marketplace.

Dr. Okonjo-Iweala also highlighted that strengthening partnerships with member states like Bangladesh is vital to fostering resilience in global trade, promoting sustainable development, and ensuring that multilateral systems deliver tangible benefits for ordinary people across the world.

The ceremony marked another step in reinforcing diplomatic and economic collaboration between the WTO and Bangladesh, with both sides expected to explore new avenues for advancing trade inclusivity, particularly in favor of developing and least-developed countries.
