The Gombe State High Court has convicted and sentenced five fraudsters to various jail terms for internet crimes. The convicts are Illiyasu Mohammed, Dan Musa, Elisha Elkana, Nasiru Mohammed, and Saidu Mohammed Laddo.

Justices H. H. Kereng and Abdulhamid Yakubu presided over the cases. Mohammed and Musa were sentenced to six months imprisonment or a fine of N50,000 each for cheating and impersonation. Elkana was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment with an option of a N30,000 fine for cheating. Nasiru Mohammed and Laddo were sentenced to two years imprisonment or a fine of N100,000 each for inducing a victim to deliver money under false pretenses.

The convicts were also ordered to restitute the aggregate sum of N2,920,000 to the victims of their crimes. Additionally, they will forfeit their mobile phones, Samsung S8 and Techno Camon 16, being instruments of crime, to the Federal Government of Nigeria.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned the defendants and prosecuted them for internet crimes. The EFCC's efforts in combating cybercrime and protecting citizens from financial scams are commendable.

The conviction and sentencing of these five fraudsters serve as a deterrent to others who engage in similar crimes. The court's decision highlights the importance of accountability and the consequences of engaging in illicit activities. The EFCC's continued efforts in fighting cybercrime will help to promote a safer and more secure online environment for all.
