Labour Party’s Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi, on Saturday joined other Nigerians in bidding farewell to one of Nigeria’s greatest football icons, Chairman Christian Chukwu, who was laid to rest in his country home at Obe, Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Obi described the late Chukwu as a shining example of discipline, resilience, leadership, and humility — qualities that defined his illustrious career as both a player and coach at club, national, and international levels.

He noted that Chukwu’s sportsmanship and selfless dedication to Nigerian football had left an enduring legacy that would inspire future generations.

“The love and honour shown to him by friends, associates, and mentees, both in life and in death, speak volumes about the fulfilled life he lived,” Obi said.

The former Anambra governor also commended Enugu State Governor, Barr. Peter Mbah, for his commitment to support ex-Rangers players and urged him to remain steadfast in fulfilling this promise. Obi further called on other state governors and the federal government to prioritize the welfare of sportsmen and women who sacrificed their youthful years in service to the nation.

“My condolences go to his immediate family, his friends, colleagues, and the entire football community of Nigeria. I pray God grants his soul eternal rest and blesses Nigeria with more Christian Chukwus in the New Nigeria that is possible,” Obi stated.

Christian Chukwu, fondly known as “Chairman,” was celebrated as one of Nigeria’s finest footballers and coaches, earning respect and admiration across the football world.
