Omoyele Sowore Condemns DSS Attempt to Silence Him on Twitter, Labels Actions “National Disgrace”

Omoyele Sowore, 2023 Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), has accused the Nigerian Department of State Services (DSS) of exporting a “national disgrace” by attempting to deactivate his Twitter account. The move, he claims, follows repeated harassment by state security agencies under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

Sowore described the latest incident as part of an ongoing campaign of intimidation, which began when DSS-backed protesters gathered outside the Federal High Court and the Federal Ministry of Justice, demanding that he be arrested. He alleges that the DSS subsequently sent a formal letter to X (formerly Twitter), insisting that his account be deactivated within 24 hours. He also warned that similar actions may be extended to his Facebook page, where he has been critical of Tinubu and state governors.

Calling the DSS actions unconstitutional and a “desecration of national dignity,” Sowore detailed a pattern of alleged abuses, including travel bans imposed by the Nigerian Immigration Service during the #EndBadGovernance protests, multiple arrests, illegal seizure of his passport, and a recent violent police raid that resulted in injury to his right hand. He further accused state actors of falsely linking him to “terrorism financing” in court, a move he describes as a pretext to justify unlawful persecution.

Sowore criticized the escalation of these tactics to international platforms, arguing it highlights the administration’s incompetence and disregard for national security responsibilities. Drawing parallels to similar tactics used during the Buhari administration, he vowed to continue his activism and resistance against what he describes as a “tiny, wicked, inhumane band of rogues,” whether he is online or in detention.

“The struggle continues,” Sowore affirmed, emphasizing that his fight for accountability and justice will persist regardless of social media restrictions or personal liberty.
