The Igbo-Eze South Local Government, in partnership with the Custos Care Foundation, has launched the Mother and Child Wellness Initiative, a community-driven programme aimed at promoting health, wellness, and family care. The gathering brought together women from across the area to encourage healthier lifestyles and strengthen the foundations of family life.

Chairperson of the LGA, Barr. Empress Ugo Ferdinand, stressed the importance of women prioritising their health and the well-being of their children, describing mothers as the heartbeat of stronger families and communities. Similarly, Comrade Egodi Igwe, Managing Director of the Custos Care Foundation, outlined the foundation’s work across Enugu State in healthcare, child protection, and women’s empowerment, noting that the initiative reflects a broader commitment to building safer and healthier homes.

Represented by her Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties, Barr. Mrs. Chidimma Egeonu, the convener reminded participants that mothers, as the first teachers in the home, play an indispensable role in shaping the future of their children. She further encouraged them to embrace exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of a child’s life, a practice that ensures infants get the healthiest start possible.

To reinforce the message of care, participating mothers were supported with essential items such as diapers and food supplies, designed to ease their daily responsibilities and promote a healthier standard of living for families.

The initiative not only addressed immediate needs but also underscored the long-term value of empowering women as central figures in community growth. By investing in maternal health and wellness, the programme positions families to thrive and creates stronger social bonds within Igbo-Eze South.
