The Anambra State Police Command, in collaboration with local vigilante operatives, has arrested four suspected cultists following a violent confrontation in Nsugbe, Anambra East Local Government Area. The incident occurred on the morning of September 16, 2025, when armed individuals reportedly engaged in a fight using cutlasses, broken bottles, daggers, and other weapons behind Nwafor Orizu College of Education.

A combined Police and Vigilante response swiftly intervened, leading to the arrest of Oyachonam Friday, 26, Akachukwu Ekwenze, 23, David Chukwuma, 25, and Eziolise Aloysius, 23, while several others managed to flee into nearby bushes. During the clash, David Chukwuma sustained machete injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment.

The arrested suspects have confessed to being members of the notorious “AYES” confraternity. Authorities confirmed that the case remains under investigation, with ongoing efforts to apprehend the fleeing cultists.

Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, reassured residents that the Command remains resolute in its fight against cultism and other forms of violent crime in Anambra State. The operation underscores the importance of community-police partnerships and swift law enforcement action in curbing criminal activity.

The incident highlights persistent challenges posed by cult groups in local communities, and the arrests signal a continued commitment by security agencies to restore peace and protect citizens. Analysts note that proactive policing and collaboration with vigilante groups can serve as a model for tackling similar security threats across the state.
